No. 12 Men’s Tennis Edged by No. 2 Chicago in UAA Semifinal Match

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - The No. 12 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis dropped its University Athletic Association (UAA) semifinal match, 5-2, to second-ranked, and top-seeded, University of Chicago, Friday, April 26. 
 
With the loss, WashU's record now stands at 12-10 on the year. Chicago, who will play No. 3 Case Western Reserve University in tomorrow's championship match, own a record of 18-1. 
 
The Bears will take on No. 4 Emory University in tomorrow's third-place match. 
 
Doubles 
 
WashU grabbed two doubles matches to generate the 2-1 lead heading into singles play. 
 
Sophomore Eric Kuo and junior Scott Yamamoto took down Derek Hsieh and Robert Zhang in convincing fashion with the 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles. 
 
Playing at No. 3 doubles, senior Jared Phillips and junior Pato Garcia Muriel edged Jack Wong and Arjun Asokumar, 8-5. 
 
At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Colin Fox and senior Gaurav Singh dropped the close, 8-6, decision to Pat Otero and Andrei Leonov. 
 
Singles 
 
Phillips dropped his match at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3, to Emil Grantcharov. 
 
At No. 2 singles, sophomore Colin Scruggs fell short to Hsieh, 6-2, 6-3. 
 
Singh was upended by Asokumar at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-2. 
 
Garcia Muriel, playing No. 6 singles, fell to Otero, 6-1, 6-2. 
 
With Kuo ahead, 7-5, 3-0, at No. 4 singles, the match was abandoned with Chicago at five points. 
 
Graduate student Sergiu Celebidachi's match at No. 5 singles was also abandoned. Celebidachi was leading Kane Kelley, 6-1, 3-5. 
 
WashU will close out the championships with the third-place match, tomorrow, Saturday, April 27 at 8:30 a.m. ET. The Bears will square off with No. 4 Emory University, who is the three-seed in the championship.
