Softball Defeats No. 6 CWRU; Wins UAA Series

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team closed out its series against Case Western Reserve University on Sunday with a 3-1 win, winning the series against the Spartans. The win also marks the Bears 20th of the season as they are now 20-8 overall. With a 9-3 UAA record, WashU pulls even with CWRU in conference standings.

The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Erin Reardon drew a one-out walk and Sydney Schneider singled to short. With two outs, Taylor Geluck drilled a shot to center, scoring both runners to take the two-run lead.

WashU added another in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kennedy Grippo led off with a single down the left field line and advanced on an Olivia Craycraft sacrifice bunt. With one out, Maggie Baumstark – coming off a stellar defensive play to end the top of the inning to keep the Spartans off the board – singled up the middle to score Grippo for the 3-0 lead.

The Spartans put a run on the board in the top of the sixth inning. Alaina Steffes drew a one-out walk and was pinch run for by Nylah Durham, who then stole second. KaiLi Gross singled to third and then stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Stevie Rieger drove in Durham with a single to right field to make it a 3-1 game.

Grippo went 2-for-3 with on run scored while Geluck was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Schneider finished 1-for-3 with one run scored and Baumstark was 1-for-2 with one RBI.
