Softball Splits with Carnegie Mellon to Open UAA Series

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The RV Washington University in St. Louis split with Carnegie Mellon on Saturday afternoon to open the UAA series. The Bears are 21-9 overall with a 10-4 mark in conference play.
 
Game 1: CMU 5, WashU 4 (8 innings)
The Bears scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. Sydney Schneider drew a one-out walk and stole second. Natalia Pilpil reached on an error by short to put runners on the corners. Schneider stole home to make it a 1-0 game.
 
WashU added another run in the top of the third inning. Erin Reardon led off with a single up the middle and then stole second. Schneider followed with a single up the middle, putting runners on the corners. Schneider was caught stealing, giving Reardon the time to score for a 2-0 Bears' lead.
 
The Tartans scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Maya Goodwin hit a one-out triple down the right field line and Koko Sagae reached base on a fielder's choice and Goodwin scored.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, CMU tied the game to force an extra inning. Sagae singled up the middle and then stole second. With two outs, she advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored as Abbey Reese doubled to right center.
 
The Bears put up two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Reardon led off with a bunt single to third and stole second. Schneider singled up the middle and then stole second. Pilpil reached base on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt, scoring both Reardon and Schneider for a 4-2 lead.
 
CMU rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth to walk it off. Kira Monji and Allie Rome moved her up a base on a sacrifice bunt. Goodwin was hit by a pitch and Sagae single to short to load the bases. Allison Li hit the walk-off single to right center, scoring both Monji and Goodwin. Sagae also went on to score on the play as there was error, ending it 5-4.
 
Schneider was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Reardon finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

First-year Maria Brooks took the loss in the circle, pitching a complete game with seven hits, four earned runs, just two walks and six strikeouts.
 
Game 2: WashU 9, CMU 5
The Bears came out to score three runs in the top of the second inning. Payton Irwin reached base on a throwing error and Elena Locascio hit a two-out single to left field. Maggie Baumstark struck out swinging but reached base on a dropped third strike, scoring Irwin for a 1-0 lead. Baumstark then stole second before Reardon hit a single up the middle to bring in Locascio. Schneider singled to center, bringing in Baumstark for a 3-0 edge.
 
In the top of the third inning, Pilpil led off with a homerun to left field to put the Bears' up 4-0.
 
CMU scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning as Kiera Boucher homered to left field.
 
The Tartans tied things up in the bottom of the fourth inning. Goodwin drew a one-out walk and Sagae singled through the left side. Maddy Beall singled up the middle to bring in Goodwin. Faith Lawrence hit the second homer of the game, scoring Beall in the process for a 4-4 game.
 
WashU took a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Schneider drew a one-out walk and stole second before Pilpil singled to left, scoring Schneider.
 
CMU once again tied it in the bottom of the fifth inning as Boucher drilled her second homer of the day to make it 5-5.
 
The Bears responded with another run in the top of the sixth to grab the lead back. Olivia Craycraft drew a one-out walk and Locascio singled through the left side. Ashley Kennedy flied out to right but moved Craycraft up a base to third. Reardon singled to short, scoring Craycraft for a 6-5 lead.
 
In the top of the seventh, WashU put up three more runs to take a 9-5 lead over CMU. Taylor Geluck reached base on a fielder error and Kennedy Grippo singled through the left side. Irwin doubled down the right field line to bring in Geluck. With two outs, Locascio singled up the middle, scoring both Grippo and Irwin.
 
Both Pilpil and Locascio were 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored while Reardon was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
 
Hattie Bond earned the win in the circle, pitching three innings of relief with three hits, one earned run, just one walk and three strikeouts.

The Bears return tomorrow for another double-header against the Tartans, beginning at 10 a.m. ET.
