ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team swept No. 6 Case Western Reserve University on Saturday afternoon in a UAA doubleheader. The Bears improve to 19-8 overall with an 8-3 mark in conference play with one more game of the CWRU series to go.
Game 1: WashU 5, CWRU 2
The Spartans took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Elizabeth Berry singled to center and Bella Russo reached base on a throwing error, allowing Berry to advance to third. Alaina Steffes doubled to left field and advanced to third on the throwing scoring both Berry and Russo.
The Bears rallied in the fifth inning to score five runs to take the lead and eventually win the game.
Maggie Baumstark led off with a bunt single and
Erin Reardon followed with a single to left center.
Sydney Schneider singled down the right field line, scoring Baumstark for the first run of the game.
Natalia Pilpil drove in the tying run with a ground out to short, bringing in Reardon for a 2-2 game and prompting a Spartans' pitching change.
Taylor Geluck reached on a fielder's choice bunt and advanced to second on the throw and Scheider scored the go-ahead run. With two outs,
Kennedy Grippo singled up the middle, scoring Geluck.
Olivia Craycraft singled to short to put runners on the corners and both runners stole a bag to make it a 5-2 game for the Bears.
Geluck was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored while Craycraft was also 2-for-3. Grippo finished 1-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored.
Jamie Burgasser picked up the win in the circle, pitching a complete game with four hits, one earned run, just two walks and five strikeouts.
Game 2: WashU 3, CWRU 0
The Bears got on the board first, putting up a run in the bottom of the first inning. Reardon led off with a bunt single and stole second. Schneider followed with a single to left center and advanced to third on the throw and then stole third. Pilpil singled to center, scoring Schneider for the 1-0 lead.
WashU tacked on two more in the bottom of the third inning. Reardon was hit by a pitch to lead off and Schneider followed with a triple down the left line to score Reardon. Pilpil sent a single up the middle to bring in Schneider for the 3-0 lead that would hold the remainder of the game.
Pilpil went 2-for-3 with two RBI while Schneider finished 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Pilpil also finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
First-year
Maria Brooks picked up her seventh win of the season, pitching a complete game with just two hits, no runs, two walks and five strikeouts.
The Bears wrap up the CWRU series tomorrow at 10 a.m.
