ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team closed out its series with Brandeis with a 9-1 win in six innings on Sunday. The Bears are now 13-7 with a 2-2 mark in UAA play.
The Bears got on the board in the bottom of the third inning.
Maggie Baumstark reached base on a throwing error and
Erin Reardon bunted to third.
Sydney Schneider drove in the first run with a single down the left field line to score Baumstark.
Natalia Pilpil reached base on a fielder's choice and
Taylor Geluck singled up the middle to score Schneider for a 2-0 lead.
WashU added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Alexa Hanish hit a one-out single to left field. Baumstark hit a two-out double to left center to score Hanish for a 3-0 lead. Reardon followed with a bunt single to the pitcher to put runners on the corners and Schneider singled to left to bring in Baumstark. Pilpil then doubled up the middle to score Reardon, putting the Bears up 5-0.
The Bears continued their offensive dominance in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring two more runs.
Ashley Kennedy led off with a single through the left side and
Olivia Craycraft followed with another single through the left side. Hanish had a sacrifice bunt to put two runners in scoring position and a single to right from
Brooke Capparelli scored Cattoor, who came in to run for Kennedy. Baumstark brought in Craycraft with a ground out to third to make it a 7-0 game.
Brandeis scored its lone run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Anna Kolb was hit by a pitch and Haley Nash singled to third. Alex Cohen drew a walk to load the bases and Kolb scored as Elle Ehrlich drew a walk.
The Bears ended things early in the bottom of the sixth inning, starting with a Schneider double through the left side. Pilpil singled to short to put runners on the corners and Schneider scored on a sacrifice fly to left field from Geluck.
Emily Talkow, how came on to run for Pilpil stole second and went on to score as Craycraft doubled down the left line to make it 9-1.
Schneider went 3-for-4 with two runs score and two RBI while Geluck finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Pilpil was 2-for-4 with one RBI and Craycraft went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Hanish finished 1-for-2 with one run scored and Baumstark was 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.
Jordan Rossi picked up her third win of the season in the circle, pitching a complete game with three hits, one run, three walks and six strikeouts.
The Bears are on the road next weekend for a four-game series against NYU, starting with a Friday game at 3 p.m. ET.
