Baseball Blanked by Violets in Series Finale; Takes Series 3-1

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team could not complete the four-game weekend sweep of New York University, Sunday, March 31. NYU took the University Athletic Association (UAA) finale by a final score of 12-0.

With the setback, WashU's record sits at 17-9 (3-1 UAA), while NYU's record climbed to 14-6 (1-3 UAA).

The Violets outhit the Bears by a final tally of 12-3. WashU saw hits from sophomore Shane Pellegrino, first year Miles Birke, and senior Zac Malis.

The Violets scored three runs in the first to generate the early 3-0 lead.

First year Anderson Gomez got out of a jam in the top of the third to keep NYU's lead at 3-0. After the first two Violets reached, Gomez induced a sacrifice bunt, a weak ground out, and a strikeout to retire the side. With two and a half innings in the books, NYU held the 3-0 cushion.

The Bears had a prime chance to score in the bottom of the third. Malis led off the frame with a shallow single to left then scooted to second on a wild pitch. First year Parker Guthrie then moved Malis to third on a ground out. However, a strikeout and a flyball to left kept WashU off the board.

Pellegrino laced a double to right center to begin the bottom of the sixth. However, Pellegrino was stranded at second following a line out, a ground out, and a fly out. Heading to the top of the seventh, the Violets clung to the 3-0 advantage.

NYU recorded a nine-run top of the seventh to open up the 12-0 lead.

The Violets kept the Bears off the board in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 12-0 victory.

WashU will now turn its attention to Fontbonne University as the Bears and Griffins will compete on Wednesday, April 3. First pitch from Kelly Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
