ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team split with Brandeis on day two of its three-day, four-game series on Saturday afternoon. The Bears took the first game before falling in the second and are now 12-7 on the year with one final game in the Brandeis series to go.
Game 1: WashU 8, Brandeis 4
The Bears put the first run of the game on the board in the bottom of the first inning as
Sydney Schneider drilled a homer over the right field fence.
Brandeis tied things up in the top of the second inning. Haley Nash led off with a single up the middle and Anna Kolb reached on a throwing error. Alex Cohen reached on a fielder's choice and Nash scored to make it a 1-1 game.
The Bears added another run in the bottom of the third inning.
Erin Reardon reached base on an error and then stole second.
Natalia Pilpil singled through the left side to put runners on the corners and
Taylor Geluck singled to left field, scoring Reardon for the 2-1 lead.
WashU had a five-run inning in the bottom of the fifth. Geluck led off with a triple to right center and
Ashley Kennedy drew a walk.
Olivia Craycraft reached on a fielder's choice and Geluck scored. With two outs,
Maggie Baumstark drilled a double to left center, scoring
Catryn Cattoor and Craycraft. Schneider followed with a single to left, scoring Reardon for a 7-1 lead.
The Bears tacked on their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Geluck led off with a walk and
Emily Talkow, who came on to pinch run, stole second. Cattoor grounded out to third, moving Talkow up a base and Talkow scored on an
Alexa Hanish sacrifice bunt.
The Judges rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Tristan Boyer reached base on an error and Brooke Boehmer drew a walk. Elle Ehrlich reached on a fielder's choice to score Ariel Schachter, who came on to run, and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Bells Burdenski singled to short to score Boehmer and Ehrlich scored on a Maddie Manes single up the middle.
Geluck finished 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI while Schneider went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Reardon finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.
First-year
Maria Brooks picked up her fifth win of the season in the circle, pitching a complete game with five hits, four runs, three strikeouts and three walks.
Game 2: Brandeis 8, WashU 5
Brandeis had a big inning to start the game, scoring six runs in the first. Burdenski, who finished 5-for-5, led off with a single up the middle and Manes singled to left. Kolb singled to the pitcher to load the bases and Nash reached on a fielder's choice.
Cohen drew a walk to bring in Manes and Ehrlich reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Kolb. Boyer was hit by a pitch to score Nash and make it a 3-0 game and Fiona Doiron singled to left center to bring in Cohen. Burdenski singled to right center, scoring Ehrlich and Boyer for a 6-0 lead.
The Bears responded with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Schneider hit a one-out double to right center and scored on a Pilpil double to left center. Geluck singled to the pitcher to put runners on the corners and Kennedy singled through the right side to score Pilpil.
Payton Irwin reached on a fielder's choice and all runners were safe to load the bases. Craycraft grounded out to first base, scoring Geluck and
Elena Locascio singled to left field to bring in Kennedy and Irwin for a 6-5 game.
The Judges scored two more in the top of the third inning. Boehmer drew a one-out walk and Doiron reached on a fielder's choice. Burdenski singled up the middle and Manes followed with a single up the middle to load the bases. Kolb drove in Doiron and Burdenski with a single through the left side to put the Judges up 8-5.
Schneider finished 3-for-4 with one run scored while Locascio was 1-for-2 with one RBI. Pilpil and Geluck each went 1-for-4 with one run scored and Geluck had one RBI.
Emma Urban took the loss in the circle, pitching 0.2 innings with five hits, six runs and one strikeout.
The Bears wrap up the Brandeis series tomorrow with an 11 a.m. game.
