St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team swept Webster on Sunday afternoon, taking the first game 3-2 and the second game 4-1. The Bears are now 4-0 on the year.
Game 1: WashU 3, Webster 2
Webster put a run on the board first in the top of the second inning. Lucy St. John led off with a single to short and advanced on a Kaelyn Kearney bunt. Lily Work then reached on a fielder's choice to move St. John to third base. Reese Waggoner reached base on an error, scoring St. John for the 1-0 lead.
The Gorloks made it a 2-0 game in the top of the fourth inning. St. John led off with a single to third base and then stole second. Work doubled to right center to score St. John for the two-run lead.
The Bears put a run up in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs,
Sydney Schneider singled to short and
Olivia Craycraft was hit by a pitch.
Erin Reardon followed with a single, dropped in behind short, and advanced to second on the throw to score Schneider and make it a 2-1 game.
WashU tied the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Kennedy Grippo reached on a fielder's choice and then stole second. With two outs,
Jamie Cendana drilled a single up the middle to score Grippo for the 2-2 game.
Catryn Cattoor hit a walk-off double to left center in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring
Erin Reardon, who had reached on a fielder's choice during her at-bat.
Reardon went 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored while Schneider was 2-for-4 with one run scored. Cattoor was 1-for-2 with the winning RBI.
Jordan Rossi notched the win in the circle, pitching a complete game with five strikeouts, two earned runs and two walks.
Game 2: WashU 4, Webster 1
The Bears scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Craycraft laid down a bunt and advanced to second on the throw. With two outs,
Payton Irwin singled to left center to score Craycraft for the 1-0 lead.
Webster tied things up in the top of the fourth inning to make it a 1-1 game. Jaelin Holdaway drew a lead-off walk. With two outs, Work singled to left center, followed by a single up the middle from Madi Stichling to scored Holdaway.
WashU took a lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Cattoor singled down the left field line and
Elena Locascio followed with a double down the left field line to score Cattoor for the 2-1 edge.
Natalia Pilpil singled through the left side to put runners on the corners and Craycraft then singled through the right side to bring in Locascio to make it a 3-1 game.
In the bottom of the sixth inning,
Ashley Kennedy drilled a two-out solo homer down the left line to make it a 4-1 lead for the Bears.
Pilpil finished 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored. Locascio went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI and Craycraft finished 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored.
Hattie Bond picked up a win in her first collegiate game in the circle, pitching a complete game with four hits, one run and seven strikeouts.
The Bears host Illinois Wesleyan on Thursday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
