BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team split with Birmingham Southern to open its spring break trip.
With today's results, WashU's record sits at 5-1, while BSC's record checks in at 7-8 on the year.
Game 1: WashU 4, BSC 2
The Bears put up their first run in the top of the second inning.
Ashley Kennedy led off with a single to the pitcher and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by
Kristina Donaldson.
Kennedy Grippo singled through the left side to put runners on the corners and then stole second. Kennedy went on to score on an error by the catcher for a 1-0 lead.
Birmingham Southern tied things up in the bottom of the second inning. Jaley Davis was hit by a pitch and advanced on a Natalie Snow ground out to second. Leah wood singled and advanced to second, scoring Davis.
WashU added another run in the top of the fourth inning. Donaldson hit a one-out single to left and then stole second base. Grippo singled to short and
Brooke Capparelli singled through the left side, scoring Donaldson for a 2-1 lead.
The Bears put another two runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning.
Sydney Schneider led off with a single to third and
Olivia Craycraft singled through the left side.
Natalia Pilpil singled up the middle to bring in Schneider for a 3-1 lead. Kennedy then drove in Craycraft with a ground out to third, putting the Bears up 4-1.
Birmingham Southern scored its second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Isabella Furgason reached base on an error and then scored, unearned, on a Snow double.
Grippo finished 2-for-3 while Pilpil was 1-for-1 with one RBI. Donaldson went 1-for-2 with one run scored and Capparelli finished 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Hattie Bond picked up the win in the circle, pitching a complete game with three strikeouts.
Game 2: BSC 6, WashU 3
BSC scored its first run in the bottom of the first inning. Katie Hart reached base on an error and then stole second and advanced to third. With one out, Morgan McGuire reached on a fielder's choice and Hart scored, unearned.
The Bears tied things up in the top of the second.
Taylor Geluck led off with a triple to right field and scored on a
Jamie Cendana ground out.
BSC rallied for five runs in the bottom of the second to go up 6-1. Wood led off with a single to left and moved up a base on a Maile White sac bunt. O Trout singled to right field to put runners on the corners and then stole second. Hart singled to left to bring in Wood and Emma Jolley followed with a single to right field, scoring Trout and Hart for a 4-1 edge.
McGuire drew a walk and Jolley advanced to third on a wild pitch. McGuire advanced to second and Jolley scored before Davis drew a walk. Davis advanced to third and McGuire scored on an error, unearned, to make it a 6-1 game.
WashU scored its final two runs of the game in the top of the seventh inning.
Catryn Cattoor drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a passed ball.
Maggie Baumstark also drew a walk and Cattoor advanced to third on a wild pitch. Schneider drove in Cattoor with a double to center field and Baumstark scored on a Craycraft ground out to short.
Grippo went 2-for-3 and Geluck went 1-for-2 with one run scored.
Emma Urban took the loss in the circle, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing six runs and four hits.
The Bears face LaGrange in a double-header on Thursday at 3 and 5 p.m. ET.
