ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The originally scheduled double header between the Washington University in St. Louis baseball team and No. 9 University of Wisconsin-La Crosse was trimmed to one game as the night cap was suspended due to darkness and will resume tomorrow. The Eagles won the only completed game of the day by a final score of 8-4.Â

With the loss, WashU's record sits at 14-6, while La Crosse's record upped to 6-3.Â

On the mound, junior
Sebastian Guzman earned the start and logged five innings for the Bears. Guzman surrendered just four hits, allowed one run, and fanned a pair. Guzman took a no decision in the contest.Â

The Eagles outhit WashU by a final tally of 8-6. Sophomore
Shane Pellegrino led the Bears with his 2-for-3 showing at the dish. Pellegrino also recorded two RBI in the contest.Â

With La Crosse threatening in the top of the fourth, Guzman worked out of a first and second, no one out, jam to keep the game scoreless. The Eagles hitter attempted to bunt, but failed to do so, and Guzman struck him out looking for the first out of the frame. La Crosse's runner on second tried to swipe third, but Guzman caught him as he threw to second and senior
Clayton Miller applied the tag on the run down for the second out. Guzman then induced a pop out to
Clayton Miller for the third and final out of the inning. Heading to the bottom of the forth, the score remained tied at 0-0.Â

In the bottom of the fourth, senior
Kaden Bernhard led off with a hit by pitch, then junior
Braden Mazone followed with an infield single to set up first and second, with no outs. After a strikeout, junior
Brandon Buday drew a full count walk to load the bases, with just one out. Junior
Dax Braemer's great eye at the plate earned him an RBI on a full count bases load walk to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Graduate student
Sam Polk got plunked on an offering, which allowed Mazone to walk home on the hit by pitch to put WashU's advantage to 2-0. The bases loaded hit by pitch warranted a pitching change from the La Crosse dugout. The Eagles reliever managed to keep the deficit to 2-0 on an infield fly and a groundout. After four innings of play, WashU held the 2-0 lead.Â

The Eagles scored six runs, on four hits, in the top of the sixth to grab the 6-2 advantage.Â

La Crosse then added two more runs in the top of seventh to snag the 8-2 lead.Â

The Bears had bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning. Heading to the top of the eighth, the Eagles held the six-run, 8-2, cushion.Â

Pellegrino brought home two runs home in the bottom of the eighth on a bases loaded single down the left field line. With the game progressing to the top of the ninth, La Crosse owned the 8-4 advantage.Â

The Eagles won the contest by a final score of 8-4.Â

Game two was suspended due to darkness and will resume in the top of the ninth, with La Crosse ahead 16-10, tomorrow, Sunday, March 24 at 12 p.m. The third and final game of the series will follow the suspended game.Â
