Baseball Wins Nail Biter in Game Two, 3-2, Takes Three-of-Four Against Gustavus Adolphus

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - After dropping the first game of the day to Gustavus Adolphus College, the Washington University in St. Louis baseball team took game two, thanks to a seventh inning homer from senior Kaden Bernhard, 3-2. With today's split, the Bears took three-of-four this weekend against the Gusties to boost its record to 13-5 on the year. With the split, the Gusties record sits at 8-5.

Game One: (RV) WashU 1, (RV) Gustavus Adolphus 6

WashU had several golden opportunities in game one, but the Bears left 12 on base.

Gustavus Adolphus outhit WashU by a final tally of 10-6. Junior Dax Braemer led WashU's offense with his 2-for-4 showing at the dish.

Graduate student Matt Lopes earned the start on the mound for the Bears. Lopes tossed 5.2 innings, allowed eight hits, and struck out five.

First year Bo Ziegler assembled a solid relief outing by racking up three innings pitched and scattering just two hits.

The Gusties scored one unearned run in the top of the first on a fielder's choice. Lopes limited the damage as Gustavus Adolphus manufactured first and third, with no one out. Lopes notched a strike out, a fielder's choice, and a caught stealing to end the top of the first with the Gusties up 1-0.

WashU stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the first as the Gusties retired the side with a grounder to first to keep the 1-0 cushion after the first inning of action.

Gustavus tagged WashU for three runs in the top of the third to open up the early 4-0 advantage.

Just like the first inning, WashU stranded the bases loaded. The Bears got the bases full with a sophomore Shane Pellegrino single, followed by walks from junior Braden Mazone and senior Clayton Miller. However, Gustavus Adolphus turned a key 4-6-3 twin killing to end the inning and to keep WashU off the board. The Gusties held a 4-0 lead after the first three innings of play.

Gustavus Adolphus put two runs on the board in the top of the sixth to secure the 6-0 advantage as the game progressed to the bottom of the sixth.

WashU loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, with just one out. Pellegrino and Mazone walked, then Miller notched a single through the left side to set up a bases loaded situation for senior Zac Malis. Malis got plunked on an off speed offering to bring home Pellegrino. However, the Gusties got out of the inning with a strikeout to put the score at 6-1, in favor of Gustavus Adolphus, after seven innings.

The Gusties bullpen shut the door on a WashU comeback, taking game one by a final score of 6-1.

Game Two: (RV) WashU 3, (RV) Gustavus Adolphus 2

Junior Sebastian Guzman spun his best start of the year, logging 6.1 innings, allowing just two runs. Guzman took a no-decision in the contest.

Mazone notched an RBI groundout to give the Bears the 1-0 first inning lead.

The Gusties tallied two runs in the top of the second to take the 2-1 lead.

The Bears evened the score in the bottom of the second. With two outs and no one on, Braemer crushed a double to left center, then Dunn poked a double that dropped between the second baseman and right fielder, which allowed Braemer to cross the plate. After one and a half innings, the score was tied at 2-2.

Graduate student Evan Minarovic got the bottom of the fourth inning started with a double down the left field line that smacked off the fence. However, a flyout and two groundouts stranded Minarovic at second, which kept the contest tied at 2-2 after four innings of play.

The Gusties were threatening in the top of the sixth after a one out triple. With a runner on third, Guzman fired an outside fastball and the Gustavus Adolphus hitter put a charge into the pitch, but Miller was placed perfectly at second. Miller caught the line drive and then fired a strike to Minarovic at third to complete the double play. With five and a half innings in the books, the score was even at two apiece.

Bernhard broke the tie in the bottom of the seventh on a solo round-tripper that cleared the centerfield fence by inches. Bernhard's four-bagger marked his third of the season and put WashU ahead by one, 3-2.

The one-run advantage was all that Weiss needed. Weiss put the finishing touches on the victory by fanning a Gustie to end the contest and to preserve the 3-2 victory.
