Singles Play Fuels No. 2 Men’s Tennis to 6-3 Victory Over No. 25 Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. - The second-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team continued its spring break trip with a dual match against No. 25 Caltech, Tuesday, March 12. After dropping two doubles matches, the Bears won five singles matches to earn the close, 6-3, victory over the Beavers. 
 
Doubles: 
 
The Bears won one doubles match as the Beavers held the 2-1 lead heading into the singles portion of the match. 
 
WashU's lone doubles victory came at the No. 2 doubles position, where junior Pato Garcia Muriel and junior Scott Yamamoto defeated Eric He and Tejas Ram, 8-4. 
 
At No. 1 doubles, WashU's duo of senior Gaurav Singh and sophomore Colin Fox dropped their decision to Kyle McCandless and Daniel Wen, 5-8. 
 
Senior Henri Ohl and junior Stefan Hester fell to Andrew Zabelo and Ishaan Kannan at No. 3 doubles, 5-8. 
 
Singles: 
 
At No. 1 singles, senior Jared Phillips took down McCandless in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. 
 
Sophomore Eric Kuo recorded a come from behind victory at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) over Andrew Zabelo. 
 
Singh earned a tough three-set victory over Wen, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 at No. 4 singles. 
 
Garcia Muriel, playing at No. 5 singles, utilized a three-set victory over Ram, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. 
 
Junior John Fakouri secured an important point at No. 6 singles. Fakouri held on to earn the 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 match. 
 
Sophomore Colin Scruggs fell to Constantin Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 5-7, 6-0. 
 
The Bears are set for a top-10 showdown, tomorrow, Wednesday, March 13 with No. 6 Bowdoin College. First serve from Azusa, Calif. is scheduled for 9 a.m. PT. Live results for the match can be found here
