Two Second Half Goals Lifts Men's Soccer Over Chicago, 2-1

CHICAGO, Ill. – In its final match of the season, the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team ended the season on a high note with a 2-1 win over Chicago on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.

In a hotly contested game, the Maroons got on the scoreboard first in just the third minute scoring an unassisted goal at 2:34.

Chicago was able to keep its lead going into half, but the Bears' defense prevented the home squad from adding to it. The Maroons fired nine shots in the first 45 minutes with sophomore goalie Owen Ross making six saves.

The second half was quiet for the first 15 minutes before junior Zach Susee found first-year Jamie Lee inside the box who scored the tying goal in the 63rd minute, leveling the match at 1-1.

With just over 10 minutes left in the game, the Bears earned only their second corner kick of the contest and made the most of it. Junior Nathan Szpak's lift into the box found classmate Tyler Allred inside the box, who then knocked the game-winner past an out-stretched goalie for the 2-1 lead.

Playing a mostly defensive side of the ball for the final 10 minutes, WashU held on, not allowing even a final shot by the Maroons.

The Bears finished with six shots in each of the halves while Chicago took 14, with just one shot on goal in the second period.

Ross played all 90 minutes in goal, making seven saves to get his fifth win of the season.

WashU completes their 2024 season with an 8-5-3 record overall with a 2-3-2 mark in the UAA.
