ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis football team closed out the regular season with a 45-24 win over Augustana on Saturday at Francis Olympic Field. The Bears finish out the regular-season slate with an 8-2 record and a 7-2 mark in CCIW play.

Augustana got on the board first, scoring on its first drive of the game. The Vikings won the coin toss and deferred to the second half, and then forced the Bears to punt on their first drive.
Augie's Mike DiGioia ran for six yards to start things off and quarterback Liam Crawley connected with Sean Schlanser for a five-yard pass and a first down. DiGioia ran for another two yards before Crawley hit Schlanser again, this time for a 26-yard touchdown pass. Joren Clem's kick was good, putting Augustana up 7-0 with 11:56 left in the first quarter.
The Bears were forced to punt again on their next drive but junior
Brady Willmer got WashU the ball back, intercepting Crawley's pass at the 20.
Senior
Kenvorris Campbell picked up three yards to start things for the Bears. Following two incomplete passes, sophomore
Ross Muchnick lined up for a 30-yard field goal to make it a 7-3 game.
Augustana punted on its next drive and senior
Collin Goldberg caught it at the 31. Following an incomplete pass, graduate student
Grant Hajicek caught a pass from Moore at the 39 and ran it for a 69-yard touchdown. Muchnick's kick was good, putting the Bears ahead 10-7.
The Vikings' Breyden Smith returned the kickoff for 66 yards to the 28. DiGioia ran the final 28 yards for a touchdown and Clem's kick was good, putting Augie ahead 14-10 with 6:11 left in the first quarter.
The Bears had the ball to start the second quarter, starting with an 11-yard run from junior
Fred Ware for a first down at their own 31. Ware ran again for eight yards, followed by 21 yards, picking up another first down at the 35. Goldberg ran for four yards before senior
Kenneth Hamilton had seven yards on two carries.
Moore hit sophomore Makael carter for a 23-yard catch to the one and Hamilton closed out the drive with a one-yard touchdown run. Muchnick's kick was good, bumping the Bears back into the lead, 17-14.
Augustana brought the ball down to the 15 before lining up for a 33-yard field goal attempt, which Clem hit, tying the game at 17-17 with 2:54 remaining in the first half.
WashU added one final first-half touchdown as the clock ticked down, starting with a run from Moore for 15 yards. Hamilton picked up two yards and Moore connected with Hajicek for 12 yards and a first down at the 43.
Moore and graduate student
Collin Hoyhtya connected for a 16-yard pass for a first down at the 27 and Moore picked up two yards rushing. The Bears moved up five more yards on an Augie offside call, putting them at the 15. Moore hit Hamilton for two yards and then threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Goldberg with just 19 seconds remaining in the first half. Muchnick's kick was good, putting the Bears ahead 24-17.
Augustana came out of halftime to tie things up at 24 apiece. Schlanser returned the kickoff for 19 yards to the Vikings' own 21. DiGioia picked up seven and six yards, respectively and then caught a short pass from Crawley. Ben Ludlum unleashed for a 66-yard touchdown run and Clem's kick was good to tie things up.
After punting on its next drive, the Bears put up another touchdown, beginning with a run from Ware for 22 yards to the 34. Ware picked up 11 more yards on two carries and Moore ran for six yards. Moore connected with Campbell for eight yards and a first down at the nine and then kept the ball for a nine-yard touchdown run. Muchnick's kick was good, putting WashU up 31-24 with 5:30 remaining in the third quarter.
The Bears defense forced a Vikings' punt and they began another scoring drive with 3:19 on the clock. Campbell ran for 12 yards to get things going and then picked up another yard to put WashU on the 41. Moore connected with Campbell at the WashU 37 and he returned it to the 33 for a first down. Campbell then ran for four more yards before Moore kept it and ran for 28 yards to the one-yard line. Ware finished it off with a one-yard touchdown run and Muchnick's kick was good for a 38-24 WashU lead.
The Bears scored their final touchdown with 1:50 remaining. Ware ran for six yards and nine yards, respectively and Moore picked up 21 yards followed by four yards. Ware completed the drive with a three-yard touchdown pass and Muchnick's kick was good for the 45-24 lead.
WashU had 481 yards of total offense (267 rushing 214 passing) while Augustana had 305 (166 passing, 139 rushing).
Moore went 14-for-28 for 214 yards with two touchdown passes. He also had 94 yards on 10 carries with one rushing touchdown. Ware led the ground game with 95 yards on 11 runs with two touchdowns. Hajicek led the receivers with 87 yards on three catches with a touchdown.
Defensively, first-year
Jack Middleton had a big day for the Bears with five total tackles and three sacks for 28 yards. Senior
Riley Merrigan had seven total tackles with two for a loss and sophomore
Joy Chane had seven total tackles.
The Bears will now wait to see if there is postseason football in their future. North Central won the CCIW and earns the conference's automatic bid. Should Wheaton receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, WashU would play in the Culver's Isthmus Bowl. The NCAA Division III football selection show will be on Sunday at 4 p.m. CT on ncaa.com.
