Five Reach Double-Figures as No. 4 Men's Basketball Defeats Rose-Hulman

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team picked up its second-straight win, defeating Rose-Hulman 84-59 on Friday evening in the Field House. The Bears are 2-0 to start the season.
 
Five Bears reached double-figures in the win over the Fightin' Engineers. Senior Drake Kindsvater led with 16 points, five rebounds, one block and one steal while senior Hayden Doyle scored 15 points, dished out eight assists and grabbed five boards.
 
First-year Connor May netted 14 points for the second game in a row to go with four rebounds and two steals. Junior Yogi Oliff had 10 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals while junior Calvin Kapral also scored 10 points to go with three rebounds and two assists.
 
In the first three minutes of the game, the score was tied twice until the Bears went on a 12-0 run. Kapral started the run with a layup. Oliff had a layup followed by another fastbreak layup off a Kindsvater steal. Oliff continued the hot streak, putting in two more layups to put WashU up by 10. Junior Will Grudzinski closed out the run with a layup to put the Bears up 17-5.
 
Midway through the first half, a layup from May extended the lead back to 12, 24-12.
 
A 3-pointer from Rose-Hulman's Rocco Richie and a layup from Joey Schmitz brought the game down a seven-point different, 24-17, with 9:15 on the clock. The Fightin' Engineers brought it down to as few as a six-point gap at the 7:36 mark on a Kobe Stoudemire 3-pointer.
 
The teams continued to exchange baskets for the next few minutes, keeping it within a seven-to-nine-point gap until a jumper from Oliff at the 2:28 mark made it an 11-point, 39-28 game. The Fightin' Engineers closed out the half with a 3-pointer from Schmitz to give the Bears a 39-31 lead at halftime.
 
Following the break, Rose-Hulman made it a six-point game before the Bears went on an 8-0 run, all scored by Doyle. The run began with an and-one play followed by a shot from distance and a jumper in the paint to put the Bears ahead 47-33 with 17:28 left on the clock.
 
The Bears continued to extend their lead as Kindsvater hit a 3-pointer at the 14:45 mark to push it 16 points. At 14:03, May had an offensive putback, followed by a tip-in by Kindsvater, prompting a Rose-Hulman timeout. May came out of the timeout to grab a defensive rebound and hit a 3-pointer at the other end for a 57-36 WashU lead.
 
Sophomore Beza Miller scored eight points in the final two minutes of the game, starting with a 3-pointer on an assist from first-year Liam Smith. He then put in a fastbreak layup following a defensive rebound and assist from first-year Lleyton Thomas-Johnson, and netted another shot from distance with just 35 seconds remaining to put the Bears up 84-57.
 
The Fightin' Engineers closed it out with a pair of free throws for the 84-59 game.
 
The Bears out-rebounded Rose-Hulman 36-27 and shot 55.7% (34-for-61). From 3-point range, the Bears were 7-for-22 (31.8%).
 
WashU makes the short trip to Webster on Tuesday evening for a 7 p.m. game and heads to Carroll on Saturday for a 2 p.m. matchup.
