Danville, Ky. – The No. 10 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team opened the 2023 season with a 2-0 win over Centre College on Sunday afternoon.
Although the game was scoreless in the first half, the Bears generated seven shots with their best chance in the 33
rd minute. First-year
Madison Foley drilled a shot to bottom center, but Centre's keeper Grace Dutcher stopped it.
WashU broke through in the 50
th minute when junior
Meryl McKenna took a pass from
Gaelen Clayton and fired it into the back of the net. The goal marks the second of her career.
The Bears quickly followed that up less than two minutes later as transfer Samantha McKibben scored her first goal in a WashU uniform. Clayton also assisted on that play.
WashU had another chance in the 68
th minute as a
Grace Ehlert put a shot in the bottom center, which was saved by Dutcher.
Sophomore
Sophia Raudez made one save during her debut in goal. The save came in the 54
th minute on a shot from Riley Givens to bottom center.
WashU had 16 total shots with five on goal. Centre finished with seven total with just one on goal. The Bears defense held Centre to just one shot in the first half.
The Bears wrap up their trip to Kentucky with a 1 p.m. ET match against Piedmont University before returning home Friday to host Carroll.
