No. 12 Volleyball Drops UAA Contest Against No. 10 NYU

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The No. 12 Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team dropped its final match of the University Athletic Association Round Robin #1 to No. 10 New York University, Sunday, Sept. 24. NYU defeated the Bears in four sets (25-16, 22-25, 25-22, 25-15). After the setback, WashU's record stands at 10-5 (2-1 UAA), while NYU's record upped to 12-2 (2-1 UAA). 
 
The Violets held the statistical advantage in kills (53-43), aces (9-5), blocks (14-7), and assists (51-41). WashU topped NYU in digs (73-72). 
 
Junior Jasmine Sells garnered her team-leading 11th double-double with 16 kills and 13 digs. 
 
First-year Leah Oyewole secured nine kills, while junior Lucy Davis was credited with six. 
 
Senior Lily Steinbach assembled a team-high five rejections. 
 
Sophomore Sam Buckley notched a match-high 35 assists in the setback.
 
Defensively, senior Alden Standley was credited with 22 digs, while junior Elise Gilroy added 17 digs.  
 
In the first, WashU earned a three-point run to even the score at 7-7. The run featured a Violet service error, a junior Zoe Foster ace, and a Steinbach kill. However, NYU answered with a three-point run of their own to earn a 10-7 advantage. Later in the set, the Violets went on a four-point run to warrant a WashU timeout. At the break, NYU held the 15-12 lead. New York then manufactured an eight-point run to extend their advantage to 24-14. The Violets went on to claim the first set by a score of 25-16. 
 
WashU grabbed the 10-9 lead in the second on a Violet attack error. Sells then recorded a kill to garner a NYU timeout, with the Bears clinging to the 11-9 advantage. After the break in play, WashU generated back-to-back points on a Steinbach kill and a Violet attack error to generate the 13-9 cushion. NYU then went on a five-point run to secure a one-point, 14-13, lead. After the run, back-and-forth play ensued as the set was even at 19-19. Later in the second, back-to-back kills by Sells gave the Bears a two-point cushion, 23-21, as NYU utilized a timeout. With WashU at set point, Sells dialed up the set-ending kill as the Bears won the second set, 25-22. 
 
In the third, WashU raced out to the quick 6-2 advantage. However, the Violets erased the early deficit and grabbed the lead, 10-7. As the third set progressed, the Violets maintained a three-point cushion, 18-15. NYU secured back-to-back points to push their advantage to four, 21-17, as head coach Vanessa Walby signaled for a timeout. The timeout sparked the Bears offense as WashU registered three of the next four points to trim the deficit to two, 22-20. In the end, NYU secured the third set by a score of 25-22.  
 
Midway through the fourth, NYU jumped in front by a tally of 13-8. The Violets went on a three-point run to extend their lead to 18-11. The Bears attempted to mount a comeback but could not erase the early deficit as the Violets took the fourth by a final score of 25-15. 
 
The Bears will take 10 days off before return to action. WashU will host Fontbonne University, Wednesday, Oct. 4 for Student Appreciation Day. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
