BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team dropped its season opener on the road against the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan University, Friday, September 1. After a scoreless first half, IWU tallied the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute. With the setback, WashU's record sits at 0-1, while the Titans' record jumped to 1-0.
WashU tallied nine shots (two on frame), compared to Illinois Wesleyan's seven shots (three on target). The Bears held the upper hand in corner kicks (7-1).
Seeing his first collegiate action between the posts, first-year
Cal L'Hommedieu was tested early. In the seventh minute, L'Hommedieu recorded his first save on a shot to his left to keep the match tied at 0-0.
WashU tallied its first shot in the 16th minute as first-year
Ethan Wirtschafter sent a screamer over the top of the frame.
In the 44th minute of action, IWU laced a shot on goal, but sophomore
Adam Mallalieu notched a save as the match went into the half scoreless.
The match remained tied, 0-0, until the 63rd minute. IWU registered the game-winning tally mid-way through the second 45.
The Bears' comeback attempts were thwarted by the Illinois Wesleyan backline. WashU sent a flurry of shots late in the second, but could not find the back of the net.
In the end, Illinois Wesleyan was able to earn the victory, 1-0.
WashU will remain of the road for its next contest. The Bears will head to Terre Haute, Ind. to tangle with Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Sunday, September 3. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. EST at the Rose-Hulman Soccer Field.
