Staten Island, N.Y. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team defeated NYU on Friday afternoon to open the UAA series. The Bears are now 18-7 overall with a 3-2 mark in UAA play.
The Violets got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Ryan Carr led off with a single through the right side and stole second. Nate Pallotta moved Carr up with a ground out to third and Carr went on to score as Cam Dunn singled to first.
The Bears tied things up in the top of the second inning.
Clayton Miller led off with a double to right center and scored on a
Braden Mazone double to right field.
NYU added another run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Max Oliveira singled to right field and moved up on a Russell Burton sac bunt. Oliveira advanced on a wild pitch and scored as Carr doubled to left field.
WashU scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to tie things up and take the lead.
Harry Mauterer hit a one-out single through the left side and moved up a base on a
Shane Pellegrino single through the left side. Miller singled to left field, scoring Mauterer for the tying run.
Kaden Bernhard lined out to right, but Pellegrino moved up a base and eventually scored on a balk to give the Bears a 4-2 lead.
The Bears scored one final run in the top of the ninth inning.
Jack Miller hit a lead-off single to second and advanced a base on a wild pitch.
Magnus Dunn grounded out to short, moving
Jack Miller up to third and he went on to score on a
Hunter Goldberg ground out.
Mauterer finished 2-for-3 with one run scored and a walk while
Clayton Miller went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
Will Henkley notched his fifth win of the season on the mound, going seven innings with two earned runs and four strikeouts.
Kyle Coates picked up his fifth save of the season, coming in for two innings of relief.
WashU continues its series with the Violets tomorrow with a doubleheader at 12 and 3 p.m.
