St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team split with Fontbonne on Wednesday afternoon at home. The Bears are now 10-14 on the season.
Game 1: Fontbonne 4, WashU 3 (9 innings)
The game remained scoreless until the top of the eighth inning when Fontbonne put up two runs. Kassidy Chrisco led off with a single to the catcher, moving Alaina Hotop, who was placed on second according to international softball rules, to third base. Makenzie Howell hit a sac fly to center, scoring Madelyn Holtmeyer, who was on to run for Hotop. Lilly Jones followed with a ground out to third to move Chrisco to second, and a Grace Paez single to right center scored Chrisco for the 2-0 lead.
The Bears tied things up in the bottom of the eighth inning. With
Maggie Baumstark placed on second,
Katie Gould put down a bunt for runners on the corners and then stole second.
Erin Reardon drew a walk to load the bases and
Natalia Pilpil drew a walk to score Baumstark.
Payton Irwin also drew a walk, scoring Gould.
The Griffins took a 4-2 lead in the top of the ninth inning. With two outs, Patience VanderMierden doubled to right center, scoring Jaynanne Roate who was on to run for Paez, who began the inning on second. Brenna Foley followed with a double up the middle to score VanderMierden.
WashU scored a run in the bottom of the ninth.
Alex Rubin began the inning on second and advanced to third on a
Jamie Cendana ground out. Baumstark drove in Rubin with a sac fly to right field, but the final out was recorded before the Bears could continue the rally.
Rubin went 1-for-4 with one run scored while Irwin finished 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Holly Stoner took the loss in the circle, pitching a complete game with two earned runs and six strikeouts.
Game 2: WashU 6, Fontbonne 1
WashU had a big third inning, scoring five runs on five hits. Gould laid down a one-out bunt and advanced to second a Baumstark fielder's choice. Irwin singled up the middle to score Gould and Pilpil double down the left field line, scoring Baumstark and Irwin. Pilpil moved up on a Reardon sac bunt and scored on a
Tami Wong double to left center. Following a Fontbonne pitching change,
Olivia Craycraft singled to left center to bring in Wong for the 5-0 lead.
The Griffins got on the board in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Ashley Carrow singled up the middle and scored on an Allysa Ibarra single to third.
WashU added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Brooke Capparelli hit a one-out single to center and Kennedy reached on a fielder's choice. Gould also reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Baumstark double to left center for the 6-1 lead.
Gould finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Baumstark went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Pilpil finished 1-for-2 with two RBI, one run scored and two walks.
Jordan Rossi earned the win in the circle with one earned run and three strikeouts in seven innings of work.
The Bears host Carnegie Mellon this weekend in UAA play, starting on Friday at 3 p.m.
