Softball Falls to Carnegie Mellon in Game One of Series

St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team fell to Carnegie Mellon 2-1 on Friday afternoon in 10 innings. The Bears are now 10-15 with a 2-7 mark in UAA play.
 
Carnegie Mellon scored the first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Erika Heffernen singled to left and stole second. Kira Monji singled through the right side to score Heffernen.
 
The Bears came out to tie things up in the bottom of the seventh inning. Brooke Capparelli was hit by a pitch and moved up on a sac bunt from Ashley Kennedy. Olivia Craycraft grounded out to third. Capparelli moved to third and went on scored on a throwing error to tie the game 1-1.
 
Carnegie Mellon took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 10th inning. Libby Eichberger was placed on second to start the inning according to international tie breaker rules. She advanced a base on a Monji ground out to second and scored as Piper Johnson singled to center.
 
Katie Gould finished 2-for-5 including a triple. She was the lone Bear with multiple hits on the day.
 
Jamie Burgasser took the loss in the circle, going all 10 innings with eight hits one earned run, two walks and eight strikeouts.
 
The Bears continue their series against CMU tomorrow with games at 12 and 2 p.m.
