Baseball Splits at Dubuque to Close Out Regular-Season

Dubuque, Iowa – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team split with Dubuque to conclude the regular season at 26-14.
 
Game 1: Dubuque 12, WashU 1 (7 innings)
The Bears scored their lone run of the game in the top of the first inning as Clayton Miller homered to left center to make it a 1-0 game.
 
Dubuque came out to score four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Colin Husko hit a lead-off single to center and Jake Cekander singled to right to put runners on the corners. Kyle Radi singled to left, scoring Husko to tie things up 1-1. Hunter Hicks followed with a homer to left field, scoring Cekander and Radi for the 4-1 edge.
 
The Spartans added five runs in the bottom of the second. Husko led off with a single up the middle and Cekander singled to short. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Husko scored as Radi reached on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Parker Allen was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Aidan Elfering hit a grand slam to left field to go up 9-1.
 
Dubuque added its final three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Colton Pfeifer triple to right center to lead off and scored as Cekander reached on a fielder's choice. Radi followed with a single to center to put runners on the corners and Hicks reached on a fielder's choice. Brandon Watkins singled to right, scoring Radi. Allen then doubled to center, scoring Hicks for a 12-1 lead.
 
Miller finished 3-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Harry Mauterer went 1-for-1 and walked twice while Magnus Dunn finished 1-for-3.
 
Matt Lopes took the loss on the mound, going 2.2 innings with 12 hits, nine earned runs and four strikeouts.
 
Game 2: WashU 20, Dubuque 0 (7 innings)
WashU put its first run on the board in the top of the second inning. Kaden Bernhard led off with a double to right field and scored as Braden Mazone singled through the left side.
 
The Bears added two more in the top of the third inning. Shane Pellegrino led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on an error by the pitcher. Bernhard doubled down the left field line to score Pellegrino for a 2-0 edge. Chris Jacinto drew a walk and Bernhard scored as Broghan O'Connor reached base on an error.
 
WashU scored three in the top of the fourth. Buday reached base on an error to lead things off and Pellegrino drew a walk. Miller hit his second homer of the day, drilled a shot to center for a 6-0 lead.
 
Jack Miller drew a walk to lead off the top of the fifth inning and Mautered followed with a single and advanced to second on an error by left field. With two outs, Clayton Miller drew a walk to load the bases and Bernhard singled up the middle, scoring Jack Miller and Mauterer. Jacinto then singled to center and advanced to second on an error, scoring Clayton Miller and Bernhard.
 
The Bears exploded for 10 runs in the top of the sixth inning. O'Connor drew a lead-off walk and Jack Miller was hit by a pitch. Mauterer singled through the left side to load the bases and a Brandon Buday single scored O'Connor for the first run of the inning.
 
Pellegrino drew a walk, scoring Jack Miller and prompting a Dubuque pitching change. Clayton Miller grounded out, scoring Mauterer and Bernhard singled to left field, scoring Buday. Mazone drew a walk, scoring Pellegrino and forcing another pitching change.
 
Jack Miller drew a walk, scoring Bernhard and Mauterer doubled to center clearing the bases and scoring Jacinto, Mazone and Miller. Buday drove in the final run of the game with a single to center, scoring Mauterer for the 20-0 lead.
 
Bernhard went 4-for-4 with four RBI and four runs scored. Mazone finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored while Mauterer went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Buday finished 2-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored and Clayton Miller was 1-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Jacinto went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored as well as two walks.
 
Kyle Coates earned the win on the mound, pitching a one-hit shutout with no earned runs, eight strikeouts and two walks.
