Softball Drops Two at Brandeis

Waltham, Mass. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team dropped a pair of games at Brandeis on Saturday afternoon. The Bears are now 18-18 overall with a 10-10 conference record.
 
Game 1: Brandeis 4, WashU 3
Brandeis scored two in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Alex Cohen singled to left center and Haley Nash drew a walk. Maddie Manes doubled to right center, scoring both runners for a 2-0 lead.
 
The Bears added a run in the top of the second as Ashley Kennedy drilled a lead-off homer to make it a 2-1 game.
 
The Judges scored their final two runs in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Erin Hunt hit a single to left field and Bells Burdenski drilled a two-run homer for a 4-1 advantage.
 
WashU put up another run in the top of the fourth inning. Maggie Baumstark hit a lead-off single and Kennedy singled up the middle. Erin Reardon laid down a bunt to load the bases and Baumstark scored as Tami Wong was walked.
 
Natalia Pilpil hit a lead-off homer in the top of the sixth to make it a 4-3 game in favor of the Judges.
 
Kennedy went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored while Reardon finished 2-for-3. Baumstark was 1-for-3 with one run scored while Pilpil finished 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
 
Jamie Burgasser took the loss in the circle, pitching 5.2 innings with four earned runs, five walks and three strikeouts.
 
Game 2: Brandeis 5, WashU 3
WashU scored first in the top of the first inning. Katie Gould drew a lead-off walk and stole second before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Kennedy drilled a two-out double to left center, scoring Gould for a 1-0 game.
 
The Bears added another in the top of the second inning. Olivia Craycraft hit a two-out single to right and Gould followed with a single. Craycraft moved to third on an error and stole home to make it a 2-0 game.
 
Brandeis tied things up in the bottom of the second inning. Nash drew a lead-off walk and Manes singled to right center. Tristan Boyer singled through the left side to score now. Elle Ehrlich reached on a fielder's choice and Manes scored as she stole home.
 
The Judges scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-2 lead over the Bears. Hunt singled through the left side and Burdenski followed with another single through the left side. Cohen reached on a throwing error by third base, scoring Hunt. Nash drew a walk and Manes reached base on an error, scoring Burdenski. Boyer hit a sac fly to left, scoring Cohen.
 
WashU put up its final run in the top of the fifth inning. Kennedy hit a one-out double to left and Wong singled up the middle to score her for a 5-3 game.
 
Kennedy went 4-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Gould and Craycraft each finished 2-for-3 with one run scored.
 
Jordan Rossi took the loss in the circle, going 2.1 innings with four hits, three earned runs, three walks and one strikeout.
 
The Bears are back home for the final four games of the regular-season, starting with a double-header against Webster starting at 3 p.m.
