St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team swept Chicago on senior day on Saturday afternoon. The Bears are 20-18 on the season. Prior to the game, the Bears honored its graduate students
Holly Stoner and
Katie Gould and seniors
Alex Rubin,
Payton Irwin,
Eimear Cunningham,
Tami Wong and
Kayla Nommensen.
Game 1: WashU 1, UChicago 0
The Bears got on the board in the bottom of the first inning.
Maggie Baumstark hit a one-out single to short and
Tami Wong singled through the left side.
Payton Irwin drew a walk to load the bases and
Erin Reardon singled up the middle to score Baumstark for the 1-0 edge.
Reardon went 1-for-2 with one RBI while Wong, Irwin and
Olivia Craycraft finished 1-for-2.
Holly Stoner picked up the win in the circle with a four-hit shutout which included four strikeouts.
Game 2: WashU 7, UChicago 5
Chicago took a quick lead to start the game as lead-off batter Laila Sims drilled a homer over the center field fence for a 1-0 lead.
The Maroons added two more runs in the top of the second inning. Tory Piuze was hit by a pitch and Ava Sinai singled to the pitcher. Piuze advanced to third on a wild pitch and went on to score on a throwing error. Sinai then scored on a passed ball for a 3-0 lead.
WashU put up a run in the bottom of the second inning. Irwin drew a lead-off walk and stole second.
Alex Rubin drew a walk and
Taylor Geluck reached base on a fielder's choice before stealing second.
Kayla Nommensen struck out but ran on a dropped third strike, forcing the catcher to throw the ball and giving Irwin time to score.
Chicago scored two more in the top of the third inning. Jensen drew a lead-off walk and Julia Folkl singled down the left field line. Both runners moved up on a passed ball and Jensen went on to score on a Madeline Murphy sac fly. Olivia Cataldo doubled to left center, scoring Folkl for the 5-1 lead.
The Bears scored again in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Rubin drew a walk and stole second. Geluck hit a ground-rule double to left, scoring Rubin to make it a 5-2 game.
WashU came out to tie things up in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Natalia Pilpil hit a lead-off single to short and moved up on a
Katie Gould sac bunt. Baumstark singled to left center and Wong drew a walk to load the bases. Irwin reached base on an error by second base, allowing Pilpil to score.
Rubin then drew a walk to score Baumstark and Geluck hit a sac fly to right to score Wong to make it 5-5.
The Bears took a lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Eimear Cunningham hit a lead-off single to left center.
Emily Talkow, running for Cunningham, moved up on a Pilpil sac bunt and Gould singled to the pitcher and beat out the throw before stealing second. Wong drilled a two-out double down the left field line, scoring both Talkow and Gould for a 7-5 edge.
Gould finished 1-for-2 with one run scored and Geluck went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Wong finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored and Pilpil finished 1-for-1 with one run scored.
Jamie Burgasser notched the win in the circle, coming on to pitch 4.2 innings of relief with no earned runs, three hits and seven strikeouts.
