Softball Splits with Brandeis on Day One of Series

Waltham, Mass. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team split with Brandeis to open the conference series on Friday afternoon. The Bears are now 18-16 on the season with a 10-8 conference mark.
 
Game 1: Brandeis 3, WashU 1
Brandeis put its first run of the game on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Erin Hunt led off with a triple to left and scored on an Alex Cohen single to center.
 
The Judges scored again in the bottom of the third. Hunt reached base on an error and stole second. Bells Burdenski singled and advanced to second on an error, scoring Hunt for the 2-0 lead.
 
Brandeis added its final run in the bottom of the fifth. Burdenski reached on an error and Cohen singled to center. Haley Nash singled up the middle, scoring Burdenski for a 3-0 game.
 
The Bears scored their lone run in the top of the sixth inning. Erin Reardon hit a one-out single to short and Tami Wong doubled to left field. Ashley Kennedy drove in Reardon with a ground out to second base.
 
Katie Gould finished 3-for-4 while Reardon went 2-for-3 with one run scored. Wong finished 1-for-3.
 
Holly Stoner took the loss in the circle, pitching six innings with seven hits, one earned run and four strikeouts.
 
Game 2: WashU 9, Brandeis 0
The Bears scored five runs in the top of the second to take an early lead.
 
Kennedy led off with a double to right field and Reardon singled to short before stealing second. Kennedy scored on a wild pitch and Reardon scored on a Taylor Geluck single through the left side for a 2-0 edge.
 
Jamie Cendana was hit by a pitch and Gould singled to the pitcher to load the bases. Maggie Baumstark hit a bases-clearing triple to put the Bears up 5-0.
 
WashU added another two runs in the top of the fourth inning.
 
Payton Irwin was hit by a pitch to lead off and Cendana doubled to left field to put both runners in scoring position. Gould singled to left field to score Irwin and Baumstark reached on a fielder's choice to score Cendana.
 
The Bears scored their final two runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning.
 
With two outs, Natalia Pilpil singled to left and Catryn Cattoor followed with a single. An error moved Pilpil up an extra base and she went on to score on a Reardon single to center. Sydney Schneider doubled down the left field line, scoring Cattoor for the 9-0 lead.
 
Schneider finished 2-for-2 with one RBI and Geluck went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Cendana finished 1-for-2 with two runs and Gould went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Baumstark finished 1-for-4 with four RBI.
 
Jordan Rossi earned her team-leading eighth win of the year to improve to 8-4, pitching a complete game with two hits, no runs, no walks and six strikeouts.
 
WashU wraps up its series at Brandeis tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
