Baseball Takes Down No. 18 UW-Stevens Point

St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team defeated No. 18 UW-Stevens Point 10-9 on Sunday afternoon to split the series 1-1. The Bears are now 16-7 on the season.
 
The Pointers got on the board in the top of the first inning. Payton Nelson drew a one-out walk and Bradley Comer reached on a fielder's choice play. Anthony Tomczak singled to center and Brendan Canterbury singled to right field, scoring Comer for a 1-0 game.
 
UWSP added another in the top of the second, starting with walks to Kamden Oliver and Logan Matson. Jakob Boos singled to center, scoring Oliver to go up 2-0.
 
The Bears rallied for four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Clayton Miller drew a lead-off walk and moved up to third as Braden Mazone doubled to left. Jack Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Clayton Miller and Mazone went on to score as Magnus Dunn reached on an error. Brandon Buday followed with a triple to score Jack Miller and Dunn for a 4-2 edge.
 
In the bottom of the third inning, Shane Pellegrino led off with a single to right and Clayton Miller drilled a two-run homer to left field.
 
The Pointers exploded for seven runs in the top of the fourth inning. Oliver led off with a single to left and Matson singled to center. Boos reached on an error by short to load the bases and Nelson singled to right to score Oliver for the first run of the inning. A double from Comer brought Matson and Boos and a single from Tomczak scored Nelson to tie things up 6-6.
 
Canterbury reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Comer. Tomczak advanced to third on a Trent Van Ess fly out to right field and scored on a wild pitch. Oliver singled to center to score Canterbury for a 9-6 lead.
 
The Bears put up a run in the bottom of the fifth. Pellegrino led off with a single to short and moved to second on an error. Mazone drew a two-out walk and Justin Zachery singled to right field to score Pellegrino.
 
WashU pulled within one run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Dunn hit a lead-off single to second and Buday singled to short. Dunn stole third and scored on a catcher's error to make it a 9-8 game.
 
The Bears took the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Dunn led off with a single to left and moved up on a Buday single to center. Harry Mauterer moved the runners up with a sac bunt and both scored on a Pellegrino single to center to make it a 10-9 game which held until the final out.
 
Pellegrino went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored while Buday finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored. Dunn went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and Zachery finished 2-for-4 with one RBI. Clayton Miller went 1-for-3 with two RBI, two runs scored and two walks.
 
Kyle Coates earned the win on the mound, going three innings with just one hit allowed and a strikeout.
 
The Bears are back in action at home on Tuesday in a single game against Westminster at 3:30 p.m.
