Softball Drops Two Games to Coe, Illinois Wesleyan

St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 23 Washington University in St. Louis softball team dropped a pair of games on Sunday afternoon, falling first to Coe College then to Illinois Wesleyan. The Bears are now 1-3 to open the season.
 
Game 1: Coe 4, WashU 0
The Kohawks got on the board quickly, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Heather Boeckenstedt drew a lead-off walk and Bree Mangelsen homered to left to make it a 2-0 game.
 
Coe added another run in the top of the fifth inning. Boeckenstedt led off with a bunt single and stole second. Mangelsen singled to center and advanced to second, scoring Boeckenstedt for a 3-0 lead.
 
The Kohawks put the exclamation point on in the top of the seventh inning. Ruby Kappeler drew a walk and, with two outs, Skylar Stookey doubled to left to score Kappeler.
 
Tami Wong, Erin Reardon and Maggie Baumstark each collected a hit against the Kohawks. Jamie Burgasser took the loss in the circle, allowing six hits, four runs and walking four batters but also struck out five.
 
Game 2: IWU 3, WashU 2 (8 innings)
The Bears put up the first run in the bottom of the first inning. Katie Gould reached on an error by third base and moved up on a Reardon ground out. Baumstark drove in Gould with a single to right field to give the Bears a 1-0 edge.
 
Illinois Wesleyan pulled even in the top of the fifth inning. Casey Wissmiller drew a lead-off walk and Madison Moore moved her up with a sacrifice bunt. Jen Kuhn reached base on a throwing error, advancing Wissmiller to third. Both runners stole a base, with Wissmiller crossing the plate.
 
In the top of the eighth inning, with Kuhn on second base as the courtesy runner, Fontanetta laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Kuhn up to third. Then, Ava Khoury drilled a homer to left center, putting the Titans up 3-1.
 
With the game on the line, the Bears stepped to the plate for the bottom of the eighth inning with Kayla Nommensen as the courtesy runner on second. With two outs, Reardon singled to right field, scoring Emily Talkow, who was running for Nommensen. WashU couldn't put together any more runs, ending the game with the final out.
 
Gould went 1-for-4 with one run scored while both Reardon and Baumstark each went 1-for-4 with one RBI.

The Bears are home again next weekend with games against Wartburg and DePauw on Saturday and Sunday.
