No. 23 Softball Defeats No. 14 Wartburg, DePauw

St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 23 Washington University in St. Louis softball team had a strong outing on Saturday afternoon, upsetting No. 14 Wartburg and defeating DePauw. With the wins, the Bears are 3-3 on the season.
 
Game 1: WashU 4, Wartburg 3
The Bears came back from being down 3-0 en route to the one-run win.
 
Wartburg scored all three of its runs in the top of the third inning, starting with a Kailey Maksim single up the middle. Kaylie Springer followed with a single to left field and both runners scored as Reegan Deputy singled through the right side. Deputy then scored on a Sydney Fellows ground out to third, putting the Knights up 3-0.
 
 WashU added a run in the bottom of the third inning, starting with an Eimear Cunningham double down the right field line and moved up to third on a Maggie Baumstark ground out. Natalia Pilpil singled through the right side and advanced on the throw, scoring Cunningham to make it a 3-1 game.
 
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bears put up another run. Taylor Geluck drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Kayla Nommensen then doubled to left field to score Geluck and cut the Knights' lead to 3-2.
 
WashU tied things up in the bottom of the fifth inning. Baumstark drew a walk and Pilpil doubled down the left field line. Geluck drew a two-out walk to load the bases and Baumstark scored as Olivia Craycraft drew another walk.
 
In the bottom of the seventh with extra innings looming, Pilpil drilled a walk-off solo homer over the left field fence, end things with a 4-3 Bears win.
 
Pilpil finished 4-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Nommensen went 1-for-2 with one RBI.
 
Holly Stoner picked up the win in the circle, pitching a full game.
 
Game 2: WashU 13, DePauw 6
DePauw put a run on the board in the top of the first, starting with a Goose More single up the middle, who then stole second. Kelsey Bernhard drew a walk and Emily Timberman was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Tigers. Katie Mathies singled up the middle to score Moore. Pitcher Jordan Rossi and the Bears' defense got out of a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout, a line-out to short and a force at second.
 
WashU quickly pulled even in the bottom of the first. Baumstark was hit by a pitch and Pilpil walked before both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. Tami Wong hit a sac fly to center, scoring Baumstark to make it a 1-1 game.
 
The Bears added another in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Payton Irwin singled up the middle and Cunningham drew a walk. Katie Gould singled through the left side to load the bases and force a DePauw pitching change. Baumstarsk singled to second, driving in Irwin to take a 2-1 lead.
 
The Tigers took the lead back in the top of the fourth inning. Drew Bratcher drew a lead-off walk and Riley Heim laid down a bunt to advance Madi Lockridge – who was running for Bratcher – to third base. Heim stole second base and Brooke Bruin reached on a fielder's choice, scoring both Lockridge and Heim.
 
WashU scored two more in the bottom of the fifth. Baumstark reached on a throwing error and moved up to second. Pilpil laid down a bunt and Baumstrak moved up to third base. Wong hit a sac fly to center, scoring Baumstark to tie things up 3-3. Geluck then drilled a triple through the right side, scoring Pilpil for a 4-3 lead.
 
DePauw had a three-run outing in the top of the sixth to take a 6-4 advantage. Macey Cox hit a lead-off bunt and Lily Jennings doubled to left center. Hanna Coffel singled through the left side and advanced to second on the throw, scoring Cox to tie things 4-4. Moore then singled through the right side and advanced to second on the throwing, bringing in Jennings.
 
Bernhard reached on a fielder's choice as the Bears threw out Coffel at home. Bernhard stole second and both runners advanced, scoring Moore.
 
The Bears erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Irwin hit a bloop single to lead off the inning and Gould reached on a throwing error before stealing second. Baumstark bunted to load the bases and Pilpil singled through the left side to score Irwin. Wong drew a walk, scoring Gould and tying things up 6-6.
 
Geluck singled up the middle, scoring Baumstark and Jamie Cendana singled down the right field lown to bring in Pilpil. Nommensen hit a sac fly to right field, bringing in Geluck and Cendana scored on an Iwrin double to left center. Sydney Schneider singled through the right side to bring in Irwin and Brooke Capparelli drew a walk. Baumstark reached on an error by the shortstop and moved up to second, scoring Schneider to put the Bears up 13-6.
 
Pilpil went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI while Geluck finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored. Irwin went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and one RBI.
 
The Bears are back in action tomorrow with at 1 p.m. game against Wartburg and a 3 p.m. game against DePauw.
