Men's Basketball Falls in Heartbreaker to North Park in NCAA Tournament

St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 18 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team lost to No. 19 North Park 72-69 in the NCAA Round of 32 on Saturday evening. The Bears conclude the season at 20-7.
 
In his final game at WashU, graduate Charlie Jacob finished with a team-high 15 points to go with four rebounds. Sophomore Hayden Doyle scored 13 points, dished out six assists and grabbed five rebounds while first-years Yogi Oliff and Will Grudzinski each finished with 11 points.
 
North Park was led by a 24-point effort from Kolden Vanlandingham while Marquise Jackson finished with 22 points.
 
The Vikings went up 8-3 in the opening minutes and were up as many as six points in the first four minutes.
 
A 3-pointer from Jacob and a jumper from sophomore Drake Kindsvater pulled the Bears within one point and another jumper from Jacob gave WashU a 14-13 lead at 13:46.
 
North Park scored six-straight to take a 19-14 lead, but two jumpers from Doyle and sophomore Jake Wolf cut it down to one point with 9:30 left.
 
The teams continued to exchange baskets with the game being tied at 24 and 29 before the Bears started a run of 7-0. Senior Kevin Davet scored on an and-one play followed by layups from Jacob and Oliff, giving the Bears a 34-29 lead.
 
Grudzinski had the hot hand as the clock ticked down, hitting three 3-pointers to send WashU into halftime with a 43-33 lead.
 
Kindsvater started the half with a jumper, extending WashU's lead to 12-points. A jumper from Doyle gave the Bears a 49-35 lead at 15:53.
 
North Park cut the Bears' lead into single digits several times, but it wasn't until midway through the quarter that the Vikings started to gain momentum to close the gap.
 
Down 10 with 9:29 left, Vanlandingham hit a free throw that started a 9-0 run that cut WashU's lead to 61-60. A layup from Shamar Pumphrey at 4:56 tied the game at 64 and a pair of free throws from Jordan Boyd pushed the Vikings ahead 66-64.
 
The game went on to be tied at 66 and 68. A free throw from Boyd a jumper from Jackson put North park up 71-68 with 1:22 on the clock before Oliff hit the back end of a pair of free throws. A free throw from Jalen Boyd with six seconds left put NPU up 72-69 and the buzzer shot from Doyle missed.
 
WashU shot 28-for-52 (53.8%) and 8-for-18 from 3-point range with a slight 29-26 edge on the boards. North Park forced 21 WashU turnovers with 10 Vikings' steals.
