Baseball Closes Out Series With Win Over Gustavus Adolphus

St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team wrapped up its series against Gustavus Adolphus with a 7-3 win over the Gusties to take the series 2-1. The Bears are now 13-4 on the season as they move into UAA play this weekend.
 
The Gusties got on the board first in the top of the third inning as Gavin Baker drilled a solo homer over the left field fence to go up 1-0. The hit marks Baker's third homer of the series against the Bears.
 
WashU tied and took the lead in the top of the fourth inning, scoring two runs.
 
Braden Mazone hit a one-out single to right center and scored as Shane Pellegrino drilled a double down the left field line. Pellegrino moved up on a Broghan O'Connor ground out to the pitcher and scored on a Harry Mauterer double to left center.
 
The Gusties put up two runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead back from the Bears. With one out, Jack Hanson reached base on an error and Baker was hit by a pitch. Chris Knowles doubled deep down the left field line scoring Hanson to tie things at 2-2. Nick Azar then drove in Baker to give Gustavus Adolphus a 3-2 edge.
 
The Bears tied things up in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hunter Goldberg drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a Brandon Buday single. Jacinto was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Clayton Miller hit a sac fly to right to score Goldberg.
 
WashU went on to take a four-run lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.
 
O'Connor led off with a double through the right side and Mauterer singled to left center to score O'Connor. Bernhard followed with a bunt single, prompting a new pitcher for the Gusties.
 
With two outs, Bernhard stole second and Mauterer stole third followed by a Jacinto walk to load the bases. Miller drew another walk, giving WashU a 5-3 edge. Mazone hit a bloop double to left field, scoring both Bernhard and Jacinto for a 7-3 Bears' lead.
 
Mauterer finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored while Mazone finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Buday finished 2-for-5 and Pellegrino went 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
 
Sebastian Guzman notched the win on the mound with five hits, nine strikeouts and one earned run.
 
The Bears open up the UAA slate this weekend against Case Western Reserve University. The first game of the four-game series is scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m.
