No. 25 WashU Splits to Close Out Pioneer Classic

Elizabethtown, Ky. – The No. 25 Washington University in St. Louis softball team split its games on Sunday to close out the Pioneer Classic. The Bears lost to No. 11 Linfield before coming back to beat Anderson.
 
Game 1: Linfield 5, WashU 3
Linfield put up its first two runs in the bottom of the first. Baily Paul was hit by a pitch to lead off and moved up to third on a Kaili Saathoff double down the right field line. Paul scored on a Katie Phillips ground out and Saathoff scored on a Claire Seats single through the left side for a 2-0 edge.
 
After three quick outs, the Wildcats added another run in the bottom of the second. Katrina Johns hit a one-out single to center and Tiani Wayton, who came on to run for Johns, stole second. With two outs, Paul singled to right center, bringing in Wayton for a 3-0 lead.
 
Linfield put up another in the bottom of the fifth inning. Paul led off with a single to left and stole second. Phillips scored Paul with a single to center to make it a 4-0 game.
 
The Wildcats took a 5-0 edge in the bottom of the sixth. Ashley Sutton hit a one-out single through the right side and Jenna Wong, who came in to run for Sutton, stole second. Johns was hit by a pitch and Paul scored Wong with a single through the right side.
 
The Bears had a three-run rally in the top of the seventh inning.
 
Ashley Kennedy singled through the left side and then stole second. Jamie Cendana drew a walk and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Maggie Baumstark singled to right field, scoring Brooke Capparelli, who was in to run for Kennedy. Katie Gould followed with a single to third, bringing in Cendana. Baumstark scored the final run of the inning, stealing home to make it a 5-3 game. However, the final out was forced in the next at-bat to stop WashU's rally and conclude the game.
 
Baumstark went 2-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored while Kennedy also finished 2-for-3. Emma Urban took the loss in the circle, going 3.2 innings with three earned runs.
 
Game 2: WashU 5, Anderson 2
The Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
 
Sydney Schneider reached base on a fielding error and advanced to second on an Erin Reardon single own the left field line. Natalia Pilpil reached on a fielder's choice and Taylor Geluck singled through the left side, scoring Reardon. Geluck stole second and both Pilpil and Geluck scored on a Kennedy single through the left side.
 
WashU scored its final two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
 
Schneider singled through the right side and Pilpil drew a walk. Payton Irwin singled to short to score Schneider and Geluck singled to center to score bring in Pilpil for the 5-0 lead.
 
Anderson rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh. Brianna Fell led off with a single to short and stole second. Jayden Brown singled to short and both runners advanced on a Kylie Sloan ground out. Maddie Schoenradt singled through the right side to score both Fell and Brown.
 
Geluck went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored while Kennedy finished 1-for-3 with two RBI. Alex Rubin went 2-for-3 while Pilpil finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Jamie Burgasser earned the win in the circle with five innings of work and no runs scored.
 
The Bears are home next weekend with a four-game series against NYU to open UAA play.
