Softball Splits with NYU to Open UAA Play

St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team split with NYU to open the first UAA series of the season. The Bears are now 8-8 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. WashU snapped a 10-game winning streak for NYU.
 
Game 1: WashU 4, NYU 1
NYU got on the board first in the top of the second inning. Madison Hand led off with a double to left and moved up on a sac bunt from Chloe Blanc. Bella Dunning singled to right field to score Hand for a 1-0 lead.
 
The Bears tied things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Maggie Baumstark reached base on a fielder's choice and scored on a Katie Gould triple to right field.
 
WashU added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Tami Wong drew a one-out walk and Payton Irwin singled down the left field line. Taylor Geluck reached on a fielder's choice play and Wong moved up to third, then scored as interference was called.
 
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Bears pushed across two more, starting with a lead-off double from Erin Reardon. Natalia Pilpil followed with a homer to center field, giving WashU a 4-1 lead.
 
Gould finished 2-for-3 with one RBI while Pilpil went 1-for-3 with one run scored and two RBI. Holly Stoner picked up her third win of the season in the circle, pitching a complete game with five hits, one run and four strikeouts.
 
Game 2: NYU 4, WashU 2
The Bears scored first in the bottom of the third inning. Baumstark drew a one-out walk and advanced to third as Gould laid down a bunt and there was a throwing error. Reardon singled through the left side, scoring both Baumstark and Gould for a 2-0 lead.
 
The Violets put up a four-run sixth inning.  With two outs, Hand singled to left field and moved up to third on a Blanc single to right center. Hannah Becker drew a walk to load the bases and Mia Lemmon was walked in for the first run of the inning.
 
Samantha Burggraf singled to right center to bring in Lily Candelari, who was on to run for Becker, as well as Blanc. Margaux Lesser singled through the right side to score Lemmon and Dunning, who was on to run for Burggraf.
 
Gould finished 2-for-3 with one run while Baumstark went 1-for-2 with one run scored. Jamie Burgasser took the loss in the circle, pitching 5.2 innings with four earned runs, six hits, four walks and five strikeouts.
 
The Bears wrap up the series with NYU tomorrow. Games are slated for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
