No. 25 Softball Defeats Calvin, Falls to No. 13 Transylvania

Elizabethtown, Ky. – The No. 25 Washington University in St. Louis softball team split its games on day one of the Pioneer Classic, defeating Calvin before falling to No. 13 Transylvania. The Bears are 6-6 on the season.
 
Game 1: WashU 5, Calvin 2
Calvin put a run on the board first, scoring in the top of the first inning. Sydney Duong drew a lead-off walk and stole second before advancing to third on a Hannah Biddl ground out. Carley Dole reached on a throwing error by third, giving Duong time to score for a 1-0 lead.
 
WashU responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Erin Reardon laid down a bunt single and stole second, then scored on a Natalia Pilpil double to left center.
 
The Bears added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning.
 
Tami Wong hit a lead-off single to center and Maggie Baumstark reached base on an error by first. Jamie Cendana moved both runners up a base with a sac bunt and scored on a Katie Gould triple to right center making it a 3-1 game.
 
The Bears continued the offensive production with another run in the bottom of the third inning. Pilpil led off with a single to left center and Ashley Kennedy reached base on a fielder's choice play before moving up to second on a wild pitch. Alexa Hanish singled to put Kennedy on third and Sydney Scheider, who came on to run for Kennedy, scored on a Wong sac fly.
 
WashU put up its final run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Catryn Cattoor hit a one-out triple to right field and scored on a Gould ground out.
 
Calvin made it a 5-2 game, which held to the end, scoring one run in the top of the fifth. Kali Yant doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on an Emma Walker ground out. Yant scored on an Emma Springer ground out to short.
 
Pilpil went 2-for-2 with one RBI and Wong finished 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI. Emma Urban picked up the win in the circle, pitching a complete game with seven strikeouts and two earned runs.
 
Game 2: Transylvania 8, WashU 3
The Bears scored first in the top of the first inning. With one out, Reardon laid down a bunt and moved up on a Pilpil ground out to short. Wong drew a walk and Reardon scored on a Jordan Rossi single to right field.
 
Transylvania put up four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Abby Frazier drew a lead-off walk and moved up on a Stella Wulker sac bunt. Emily Hestand reached on a throwing error to put runners on the corners and Frazier scored on a Taylor Senter single down the left field line. Annie Schuck went on to hit a homer to bring all runners in for a 4-1 lead.
 
The Pioneers added two more runs in the bottom of the second. Hadley Carter led off with a single to right and moved up on a sac bunt from Ry'An Tharp. Frazier reached base on a fielding error and advanced to second, putting two runners in scoring position. Hestand singled and advanced to second on the throw, scoring both Carter and Frazer for a 6-1 edge.
 
WashU scored a run in the top of the third inning. Wong drew a one-out walk and then stole second. Wong went on to score on a Payton Irwin single to right.
 
Transy scored again in the bottom of the third as Schuck drilled her second homer of the day over the center field fence to make it a 7-2 game.
 
The Bears scored their final run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Pilpil doubled to center and Eimear Cunningham drew a two-out walk. Irwin drove in Pilpil with a single to center, cutting it to 7-3.
 
The Pioneers added the final run in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Carter drew a walk and stole second, scoring on a Tharp triple.
 
Irwin finished 2-for-2 with two RBI. Jordan Rossi took the loss in the circle with two earned runs in two innings of work.
 
The Bears wrap up the Pioneer Classic tomorrow with an 11:30 a.m. ET game against Linfield and a 3:30 p.m. ET game against Anderson.
