Daytona Beach, Fla. – The No. 2 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team defeated Division II Embry Riddle 4-3 to open its spring break trip in Florida.
The Bears took a 2-1 lead following doubles, picking up wins at first and third doubles.
The second doubles team of
Gaurav Singh and
Scott Yamamoto beat Michele Iftimie and Lukas Schneider 6-2 at third doubles to notch the first win of the match.
Abhi Ramireddy and
Phuc Huynh then beat Alexis Guedy and Luke Paschal 6-2 at first doubles to take a 2-0 lead.
Pato Garcia Muriel and
Colin Scruggs fell to Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo 6-2 at third doubles.
The Bears went on to win three of six singles matches to take the win.
Ramireddy picked up the first win for WashU in singles, taking down Iftimie 6-3, 6-3 at first singles, making it a 3-1 match.
Jared Phillips then lost to Fernando Alonso 6-1, 6-2 at second singles and
James Shaheen lost to Pol Fontdegloria 6-1, 1-6, 10-8 at sixth singles to even the score.
Eric Kuo defeated Paschal 6-2, 6-3 at fifth singles to make it a 4-3 match and Scruggs defeated Yoav Nir 7-5, 7-5 at fourth singles. Singh fell to Diaz Rodrigo 7-6(7-3), 6-2 at third singles.
The Bears play a pair of matches tomorrow, starting with Stevens at 9 a.m. ET followed by Stetson at 3 p.m. ET.
