St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 23 Washington University in St. Louis softball team split its games on Sunday afternoon, topping No. 14 Wartburg before falling to DePauw. The Bears are now 4-4 on the season.
Game 1: WashU 3, Wartburg 1
The Bears, playing as the away team, got on the board right away in the top of the first inning. With two outs,
Natalia Pilpil singled up the middle and
Erin Reardon followed with a walk.
Tami Wong drilled a double down the left field line, bringing in Pilpil and Reardon for a 2-0 edge.
Wartburg put its lone run on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kaylie Springer led off with a single to short and Reegan Deputy drew a walk. Both runners stole a bag and Springer scored on a sac fly from Lauren Frerichs.
The Bears added their third run in the top of the sixth inning. Wong led off with a double to left center.
Emily Talkow, running for Wong, advanced to third on a passed ball and then scored on a wild pitch.
Pilpil went 2-for-4 with one run scored while Wong finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Jamie Burgasser picked up the win in the circle, her second of the season, going a complete game with five strikeouts.
Game 2: DePauw 5, WashU 2
The Bears scored first in the bottom of the first inning. Reardon led off with a single up the middle and moved to third on a
Brooke Capparelli sac bunt. Pilpil sent a double to center, scoring Reardon for a 1-0 lead.
DePauw tied things up in the top of the second inning. Riley Heim led off with a bunt and then stole second. Emily DuMais singled to the pitcher and Madi Lockridge, who was running for Heim, scored on a throwing error.
WashU took another lead in the bottom of the second. Catryn Catoor hit a lead-off double and moved to third on a
Kayla Nommensen sac fly.
Olivia Craycraft sent a double to left center, bringing in Catoor for the 2-1 advantage.
DePauw tied things up in the top of the fourth inning, starting with a Kelsey Bernhard double to left. She then stole third and scored on an Alyssa Anderson sac fly to right field.
The Tigers went on to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Goose Moore led off with a triple right and scored on a Brooke Bruin ground out to short.
In the top of the seventh inning, DePauw added two more insurance runs. Caelyn Moran led off with a double down the left field line. Abby Pyburn, who came on to run for Moran, stole third and then scored on a wild pitch to make it a 4-2 game. More was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a passed ball. Then, Moore scored the fifth and final run of the game on a wild pitch.
Cattoor went 2-for-3 with one run scored while Pilpil finished 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Holly Stoner took the loss in the circle, allowing 10 hits and three earned runs while striking out four.
The Bears are back home on Wednesday for a double-header against Illinois College beginning at 2 p.m.
