No. 21 Men's Basketball Takes Control of UAA With Win Over No. 20 Emory

St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 21 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team gained sole possession of first place in the UAA with a 60-59 win over No. 20 Emory on Sunday afternoon in the Field House.
 
The Bears were led by sophomore Hayden Doyle who had 13 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals, as well as sophomore Drake Kindsvater who netted 12 points to go with nine rebounds and three steals.
 
The opening minutes of the game were evenly paced between the Bears and the Eagles with the game tied twice in the first four minutes.
 
A layup from graduate Charlie Jacob at 13:56 put the Bears up 10-6 and a jumper from Doyle extended that lead to six points.
 
After Emory cut it down to a three-point gap, the Bears scored five-straight points to go up eight, 19-11. Jacob put in a layup and the ensuing free throw after being fouled and first-year Yogi Oliff netted a bucket.
 
WashU took its biggest lead of the first half at the 7:44 mark as Doyle netted a shot from distance to go up 25-16. From there, the Bears maintained as much as a seven-point edge until the final two minutes as back-to-back Emory layups sent WashU into halftime with a slight 31-28 lead.
 
The Bears continued to hold a several-point lead at the start of the second half. A 3-pointer from Emory's Logan Shanahan closed it to 40-39.
 
Up one point with 11:07 on the clock, the Bears went on a 10-0 run to take a 55-44 lead.
 
Doyle started the run with a jumper, followed by a jumper from junior Jabari Chiphe. Senior Kevin Davet and Oliff put in back-to-back layups and Doyle hit a jumper following a Kindsvater steal.
 
With 4:10 remaining, Emory closed out the game with a 9-0 run, but the Bears held the Eagles off en route to the 1 point win.
 
WashU edged Emory 34-27 on the boards and held the Eagles to 4-for-17 (23.5%) from 3-point range.
 
The Bears are back in action next weekend with a road trip to Brandeis and NYU.
