Chicago, Ill. – The No. 25 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team edged Chicago 63-62 to close out the regular-season on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bears are 19-6 overall and end UAA play with a 10-4 record.
Sophomore
Drake Kindsvater led the way with 19 points and nine rebounds while sophomore
Hayden Doyle scored 12 points to go with six rebounds and four assists. Graduate
Charlie Jacob netted 10 points to go with four rebounds, four assists and three steals.
The teams opened the game exchanging baskets with the Bears taking their first lead at 17:01 following a Kindsvater 3-pointer to make it 7-4. WashU then scored the next eight points of the game including four from first-year
Will Grudzinski to go up 15-4 at 12:29.
WashU maintained a double-figure lead until 8:31 when a free throw from Arrish Bhandal cut it down to nine. The Maroons scored the next 10 points to go up 22-21 with 3:19 on the clock.
A 3-pointer from Kindsvater with just over two minutes remaining gave the Bears a small lead but Chicago quickly tied it up with a jumper from Thomas Kurowski. With 1:33 remaining, Doyle netted a jumper to send the Bears into halftime with a 26-24 edge.
The Maroons hit the first basket of the second half to time things up at 26 apiece and the game would go on to be tied again five more times throughout the second half.
A layup from senior
Kevin Davet followed by a jumper from Jacob put the Bears up 30-26 at with 17:06 on the clock.
Neither team would go up by more than four points until 7:19 when an and-one play from Jacob put WashU ahead 50-45.
With the clock ticking down, WashU held a slight lead of as many as four points but a 3-pointer from Bryce Hopkins at 3:33 tied things up at 56, which would be the final tie of the game.
The Maroons went up six points, 62-56 with 1:31 remaining.
Kindsvater scored on a putback with 57 seconds left to make it a 62-58 game. With 25 seconds on the clock, Doyle drilled a 3-pointer to leave the Bears trailing by just one point. Then, with 10 seconds remaining, Doyle grabbed a defensive board and went down make the game-winning lay up to send WashU home with a victory.
The Bears out-rebounded Chicago 41-24 and shot a 7-for-16 (43.8%) from 3-point range.
WashU now waits until Monday afternoon to find out its fate in the NCAA Tournament.
