No. 22 Men's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker to No. 21 CWRU

Box Score St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 22 Washington University men's basketball team lost a heartbreak to No. 21 Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) on Friday evening, 75-74. The Bears are now 17-6 overall with an 8-4 mark in UAA play.
 
Senior Kevin Davet had a career day in the paint, netting a career-high 21 points to go with five rebounds and two blocks. Sophomore Drake Kindsvater registered his third double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds while sophomore Hayden Doyle finished with 10 points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists.
 
The Bears could not contain CWRU's Mitch Prendergast who finished with 29 points.
 
WashU started the game in dynamite fashion, opening on a 10-0 run behind seven points from Davet. After the Spartans got on the board with a 3-pointer, layups from first-year Yogi Oliff and Kindsvater extended the Bears lead to 14-3.
 
The Bears continued to maintain a double-digit lead over CWRU until midway through the first half.
 
Umar Rashid hit a jumper at 9:23 to make it a 22-13 game and the Spartans scored another five-straight points to cut WashU's lead to 22-18. CWRU ultimately went on to tie things up at 24 with 6:46 on the clock.
 
Tied again at 31, the Spartans scored four-straight to go up 35-31. Oliff netted a 3-pointer with 1:17 on the clock and Davet slammed one home on a pass from Doyle to give the Bears a 36-35 lead at halftime.
 
The Bears opened the second half on a 7-0 run behind a layup from Doyle and five points from graduate Charlie Jacob, taking a 43-35 lead.
 
The Spartans closed the deficit to three points, 47-43 at the 14:22 mark, but WashU answered with layups from Jacob, Doyle and Kindsvater to go up nine points, 53-44.
 
The Bears maintained up to a six-point lead until the 8:27 mark when a 3-pointer from Cole Frilling and a free throw from Ian Elam made it a two-point, 61-59 game.
 
A 3-pointer from Frilling at 5:45 followed by a layup from Elam at 4:13 gave the Spartans a 67-66 lead. The Bears scored the next six points for a 72-67 advantage but the Spartans netted four-straight to tie things up at 72.
 
Davet put in a layup on a pass from Oliff to give WashU a 74-72 lead with 35 seconds remaining but Prendergast drilled a 3-pointer with 22 seconds remaining to give CWRU a one-point, 75-74 edge.
 
Despite a last-second attempt to put in the game-winning shot, the Bears fell to the Spartans by one.
 
WashU will look to right the ship on Sunday with a 12 p.m. game against Carnegie Mellon. Prior to tip-off, the Bears will honor their seniors Nate Bloedorn, Davet, Liam Dillon and Jacob.
