New York, N.Y. – The No. 22 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team defeated No. 12 Johns Hopkins 67-61 on Sunday afternoon in the inaugural Scholars Classic, hosted by NYU.
Four Bears reached double-figures against Johns Hopkins, led by 14 points and nine rebounds from junior
Drake Kindsvater. Junior
Hayden Doyle had 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists while sophomore
Yogi Oliff had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists. Junior
Kyle Beedon scored a career-high 10 points to go with five rebounds.
After Hopkins jumped out to 4-0 lead, Doyle hit a jumper followed by a 3-pointer from sophomore
Will Grudzinski. Doyle then drained a shot from distance to make it an 8-6 game for the Bears.
The teams exchanged points over the next several minutes and Hopkins took a 15-10 lead midway through the first half following a Sidney Thybulle layup.
The Bluejays build up a six-point lead with a 3-pointer from Brian Johansson at the 6:37 mark but a jumper from Doyle and a dunk from first-year
Jake Davis brought the Bears within two points, 25-23.
Hopkins closed out the first half on an 11-2 run, taking a 36-25 lead in the final minute to go into the half up double-digits.
The Bluejays maintained a double-digit lead in the opening minutes of the second half but WashU cut it to six, 43-37, at the 16:07 mark following a jumper from Kindsvater and a 3-pointer from Beedon.
The Bears continued to battle Hopkins and stay within a handful of points until a 7-0 run gave WashU a 55-53 lead with 6:21 remaining. Beedon hit a jumper followed by a layup and first-year
Ryan Cohen drained a shot from distance to give WashU the edge.
Hopkins closed it to one point, 56-55, with 5:48 remaining but the Bears went on a 9-0 run to take their largest lead of the game – eight points – with 4:01 remaining.
Oliff hit a 3-pointer followed by a steal and a fastbreak jumper to get things going. Oliff stole the ball again and dished it to Kindsvater for a jumper and Davis netted a pair of free throws.
With one minute left, a layup from the Bluejays' Charlie Jackson brought them within three points, 64-61, but Doyle hit a pair of free throws and Grudzinski netted one to close things out and give WashU the win.
The Bears shot 24-for-58 (41.4%) and 9-for-23 (39.1%) from 3-point range.
WashU opens its home slate next weekend with the 39
th Annual Lopata Classic. The Bears will face Babson at 7 p.m. on Friday and will play either UW-Eau Claire or Hanover on Saturday afternoon.
