FULTON, Mo. - The No. 10 Washington University in St. Louis volleyball program traveled to Westminster College to square off with the Blue Jays, Wednesday, November 1. Behind a balanced box score and a seven-point comeback in the third set, WashU swept Westminster in straight sets (25-12, 25-15, 25-23). With the win, the Bears' record sits at 20-7, while WC's record fell to 16-13.
WashU held the statistical advantages in kills (38-23), aces (10-5), assists (36-21), and digs (51-44).
Defensively, Sells generated a match-high 16 digs. Junior
Elise Gilroy was credited with 12 digs. After tonight's match, Gilroy is now 29 digs away from securing 1,000 digs in her WashU career.
In the opening frame, WashU generated a quick 4-0 lead on a Buckley ace, two kills by Oyewole, and a kill by senior
Lily Steinbach. Back-to-back kills by junior
McKenzie Washington pushed WashU's advantage to five, 7-2, as the Blue Jays called a timeout. The Bears then upped their lead to 13-4 after a four-point run. The run featured a Washington rejection, a Standley ace, and kills from Buckley and Sells.
Later in the frame, the Bears welcomed an ace from Buckley and a Blue Jay miscue to open up a 19-8 cushion as Westminster called their second timeout of the set. With WashU at set point, Washington dialed up a thunderous kill to give the Bears the first set victory by a final score of 25-12.
Early in the second, the Bears opened up an early, 7-3 lead. The first seven WashU points saw five Westminster miscues, one ace, and one kill. The Bears then doubled-up the Blue Jays, 10-5, on a Westminster attack error. With WashU in front 13-6, Sells and Oyewole each registered a kill to up the advantage to 15-7. Tori Taylor garnered her first kill of the season to give WashU the commanding, 19-9, cushion.
After a Sells kill put the Bears at set point, junior
Laura Brambilla tallied the set ending kill to give WashU the 25-15 set two victory.
Westminster took the early 8-3 lead in the third set as head coach
Vanessa Walby signaled for a timeout. With the Blue Jays in front by a score of 14-7, the Bears took their second timeout of the set. A three-point WashU run trimmed the Blue Jay lead to five, 16-11. The Bear run saw two Westminster miscues and a Davis ace. Later in the set, three straight WashU kills cut the deficit to just three, 23-20, as the Blue Jays utilized a timeout.
However, the pause in action did little to slow down the WashU comeback efforts as a Davis kill, a Westminster ball handling error, and an Oyewole kill evened the score at 23-23. With the score tied, the Blue Jays manufactured back-to-back attack errors as WashU erased a seven-point, 16-9, deficit to win the third set, 25-23, and to take the match.
The Bears will travel to Decatur, Ill. to complete their 2023 regular season slate, Saturday, November 4. WashU will open the Millikin Tri with a neutral site match against Hendrix College at 3:30 p.m., before taking on host, Millikin University, who is currently receiving votes in the latest AVCA top-25 poll, at 6 p.m.
