Football Shuts Out Elmhurst 66-0

St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis football team dominated Elmhurst, 66-0, on Saturday afternoon during Parent and Family Weekend. It is the second-highest point total the Bears have scored in program history. The record of 88 points was set in 1938.
 
The Bears are now 6-2 on the season and 5-2 in the CCIW.
 
After a punt on Elmhurst's first drive of the game, the Bears started at the 27. On the first play of WashU's drive, junior Kenneth Hamilton ran it in for a 27-yard touchdown and Chris Vartanian's kick was good for an early 7-0 lead for the Bears.
 
WashU held the Bluejays to eight yards on the following drive before they were forced to punt.
 
The Bears started the next drive on the 18 and Fred Ware began the drive with a one-yard run. Quarterback Matt Rush hit Ware for a 10-yard run for a first down at the seven and Ware ultimately scored a 12-yard touchdown. Vartanian hit the extra point for a 14-0 lead.
 
WashU started what was ultimately a scoring drive in the final 2:11 of the first quarter.
 
Rush ran for four yards and Hamilton picked up 22 yards for a first down at the 32. The Bears lost six yards in the final play of the quarter but opened the second quarter with a 20-yard pass from Rush to Gabriel Sirek for a first down at the 18.
 
Ware picked up a yard and Rush connected with Ware for nine yards and a first down at the eight. Ware ran again for another seven yards and first-year Levi Moore ran it in for the final yard and a touchdown. Vartanian's kick was good for a 21-0 advantage.
 
Elmhurst reached the 27 before being forced to punt. WashU began its drive at the 45 and Hamilton started things off with a one-yard run. Rush hit Taidhgin Trost for 12 yards and a first down and then connected with Makael Carter with another 20 yards and a first down at the 12.
 
Rush picked up five yards and Hamilton scored his second touchdown of the day with a seven-yard run. Vartanian converted the kick for a 28-0 Bears' lead.
 
On the Bluejays next drive, Carlos Pena tackled quarterback Connor Buyck and Matthew Schmal followed with an interception on Buyck's pass on the next play, giving the Bears the ball at the 25.
 
Ware ran for 12 yards for a first down at the 13 and then finished it off with a 13-yard touchdown run. Vartanian's kick was good, putting the Bears up 35-0.
 
Another drive for Elmhurst ended in a punt, giving WashU the ball at its own 40. Clark Stephens hit Trost for a 19-yard pass and then found Grant Hajicek for six yards. Stephens connected with Trost again for 17 yards and Kenvorris Campbell ran for 14 yards before completing the drive with a four-yard touchdown run. Vartanian hit the extra point for a 42-0 Bears lead.
 
Both teams went four-and-out on their respective drives to open the third quarter. Following two plays for Elmhurst, Ryan Schmadtke picked off the ball at the 37 and ran it in for a touchdown. Bernie Cueto hit the extra-point kick for a 49-0 game.
 
Schmadtke did it again on the following drive, picking off Buyck's pass again and running it in for a 40-yard touchdown. Cueto hit the kick again, putting the Bears up 56-0.
 
The Bears added another three points with 3:07 remaining in the third quarter. After reaching the 16, the Bears lined up for a field goal and Vartanian hit the 33-yarder for a 59-0 WashU lead.
 
WashU opened up the fourth quarter with its pass intercepted, but Elmhurst was unable to capitalize, forcing a punt. The Bears then were forced to punt but on the first play of Elmhurst's drive, Nate Couty fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Jacob Elliot, giving the Bears the ball again.
 
The Bears began their drive at the 26 and first-year Cal Newell ran it in for a 26-yard touchdown. Cueto hit the kick, putting WashU up 66-0.
 
WashU had 411 yards of total offense (281 rushing, 130 passing) while holding Elmhurst to 119 yards of total offense.
 
Artrell Miller led rushers with 91 yards on 15 attempts while Ware had 62 yards on 10 rushes and two touchdowns. Hamilton finished with 60 yards on five rushes with two touchdowns. Trost had 48 receiving yards on three catches to lead receivers.
 
The Bears played four quarterbacks with Rush going 6-for-10 with 75 yards and Clark Stephens going 5-for-7 with 55 yards.
 
Defensively, Henry Murr had six total tackles with one tackle for a loss and one sack. Andrew Dotson finished with four total tackles and Bradley Hamilton also had four total tackles with two pass breakups.
 
Schmadtke finished with two interceptions for 100 yards.
 
WashU has its final regular-season road game next weekend as they travel to Wheaton before closing out the regular-season with a home game against Carroll on Nov. 11.
