Atlanta, Ga. – The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team edged No. 25 Emory, 60-57, on Sunday afternoon to improve to 6-1 in the UAA and sit in first place. The Bears have beat four nationally-ranked UAA opponents this season.
Senior
Maya Arnott led all scorers with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds as well as two steals. Junior
Jessica Brooks netted 17 points with six rebounds and dished out seven assists, tying her career high. Senior
Karisa Grandison also hit double-digits with 11 points.
The game opened with back-and-forth between the two teams, with neither taking more than a three-point lead until the final 37 seconds when a 3-pointer from Emory's Lily Kennedy put the Egales up 16-12.
First-year
Jordan Rich netted a layup but another 3-pointer from the Eagles' Daniella Aronsky ended the quarter with a 19-15 Emory lead.
The Eagles carried that momentum into the second quarter, going on a 9-0 run to take a 28-17 lead with 7:02 on the clock. Emory held a double-digit until the final three minutes of the quarter when the Bears scored seven-straight.
Brooks netted a pair of free throws to start the run and Rich followed with a 3-pointer. First-year
Nailah McBeth closed out the run with a layup to cut Emory's lead to 32-28. The Eagles went into halftime with a five-point, 35-30 edge.
Following a 3-pointer from Brooks at the 7:36 mark in the third quarter, WashU took a slight 38-37 lead. The game went on to be tied three more times in the third quarter.
Tied at 41 with 3:11 on the clock, Brooks hit two free throws to give the Bears a 43-41 lead. Tied again, 43-43, with 15 seconds remaining, Arnott hit a layup to give WashU a lead, but Emory's Claire Brock hit a buzzer 3-pointer to give the Eagles a 46-45 edge heading into the final quarter.
In the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, Emory went up 52-47.
Down four midway through the fourth quarter, Brooks hit a 3-pointer to cut it to one point. Then, with 1:58 remaining, a 3-pointer from
Naomi Jackson gave the Bears a 57-55 lead. Emory's Mariane Auza tied things up at 57 apiece, but with 20 seconds left, Grandison hit a shot from distance to secure the win for WashU.
The Bears forced 17 Emory turnovers and held the Eagles to 21-for-60 (35%) and 7-for-25 (28%) from 3-point range.
WashU returns home on Friday evening to begin the second half of the UAA slate with a 5:30 p.m. game against Rochester.
