Pittsburgh, Pa. – The No. 22 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball dropped its second-straight UAA road contest with a 71-58 loss to (RV) Carnegie Mellon on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Bears are 12-4 overall with a 3-2 mark in conference play.
First-year
Yogi Oliff led the Bears with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists and sophomore
Hayden Doyle netted 13 points.
The Tartans had four plays in double figures, led by 21 points from Justin Allen. Jack Stone scored 18 points while R.J. Holmes had 12 points and 13 rebounds.
The Bears started the game with a 5-0 run behind a 3-pointer from Oliff and a jumper from graduate
Charlie Jacob. WashU held a small lead until the 16:00 mark when CMU tied things at 7-7 and went on a 16-0 run for an 18-7 lead.
A layup from first-year
Calvin Kapral and a 3-pointer from Doyle cut it down to a six-point game, 24-18, but following a 6-0 run, the Tartans went back up by double-digits, 32-20. A 3-pointer with seven seconds let sent the Bears into halftime trailing 35-22.
The Tartans came out to hit back-to-back 3-pointers in less than two minutes to go up 41-22.
WashU went on to score six-straight behind a layup from Oliff, a 3-pointer from
Will Grudzinski and a free throw from junior
Jabari Chiphe, closing the game to 43-32.
The Bears brought it down to single digits, 51-43, with 10:25 remaining following a jumper from senior
Kevin Davet and a layup from Doyle.
WashU ultimately went on to close it to just one point, with 5:04 on the clock, following an 8-0 run. Oliff started the run with a 3-pointer and followed with a steal and a layup. Doyle bookended with another shot from distance, making it a 58-57 game.
Carnegie Mellon, however, closed out the game on a 13-1 run en route to the win.
The Tartans outrebounded WashU 41-36 and held the Bears to 23-for-62 (37.1%) from the floor and 7-for-20 (35.0%) from 3-point range.
The Bears will look to bounce back on Friday evening with a road game at Rochester at 7:30 p.m. ET.
