St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 6 Washington University in St. Louis men's swimming and diving team defeated DePauw 182-89 on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to competition, the Bears honored seniors
Walker Ferry,
Jonathan Ma,
Mason Kelber and
Nolan Shields.
WashU opened the meet with the top four finishes in the 200 medley relay. The team of
Kyle Wolford,
Justin Rockaway,
Jonathan Ma and
Kai Garren led the field with a time of 1:33.02. The group of Alex McCormick,
Nathan Lin,
Austin Bick and
Nicolas Gomez took second in 1:34.60.
First-year
Orluke Borjigin won the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:49.44 while first-year Matthew Giardinelli finished second in 10:04.86. Junior
Brendan Long took third in 10:04.86 and junior
Kenneth Yeh finished fourth with a time of 10:07.86.
Kelber won the field in the 200 freestyle, swimming to a time of 1:40.31. Sophomore
Ryan Hillery finished second in 1:44.82 while sophomore
Danny Sibley took third with a time of 1:45.35.
The Bears claimed the top five spots in the 100 backstroke, led by Wolford, a junior, who swam to a time of 52.33.
Jonathan Kim finished second in 53.49 while
Andy Zhu took third in 54.74.
WashU continued to roll, winning the 200 butterfly as first-year
Matthew Walker claimed the top spot with a time of 1:53.57. First-year
Ethan Feng finished second in 1:55.05 while Ma took third with a time of 1:57.16.
Gomez, a first-year, raced to a time of 22.00 to win the 50 freestyle for the Bears.
Feng followed with a win in the 100 freestyle, racing to a time of 46.96.
Shields was the winner in the 200 backstroke, racing to a time of 1:58.14.
Kim led the way in the 200 breaststroke, winning with a time of 2:07.40. Rockaway, a sophomore, took second in 2:17.83.
Giardinelli won the field for the Bears in the 500 freestyle, swimming to a time of 4:43.04.
In the 100 butterfly, Ma claimed the top spot with a 50.38.
Sibley won the 400 IM for WashU, racing to a time of 4:06.63.
In the final race of the day, the 200 freestyle relay, the Bears' team of Gomez, Garren, Rockaway and Bick finished first, racing to a time of 1:25.75. The group of Giardinelli, Long, Ferry and Yeh took fourth in 1:33.07.
Diving
On the 1-meter board, sophomore
Elliot Polikowski finished with 170.60 points.
On the 3-meter board, Polikowski racked up a score of 142.75.
The Bears now have a break in competition until February 8 when they travel to Emory for UAA Championships which lasts four days.
