Cleveland, Ohio – The (RV) Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team dropped its first UAA game on Friday evening in a 74-64 loss to Case Western Reserve (CWRU) on the road. The Bears are now 10-5 overall with a 3-1 mark in conference play.
Senior
Maya Arnott led WashU in the loss, scoring 20 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Junior
Jessica Brooks also reached double figures, netting 17 points to go with five assists. Senior
Naomi Jackson chipped in nine points and grabbed six boards.
CWRU was paced by Isabella Mills, who led all scorers with 36 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and three steals.
After back-and-forth action to start the game, a jumper from senior
Sammi Matoush tied things up 6-6 with 6:52 remaining in the first quarter. CWRU would go on to take a four-point, 15-11 lead with just under two minutes remaining on a Lucy VanderBeck 3-pointer.
Brooks laid one in with 1:41 on the clock which started a 8-0 run for the Bears to close out the first quarter with a 19-15 lead.
A 3-pointer from Mills tied the game at 21 apiece with 7:51 on the clock in the second quarter. Another 3-pointer from Mills triggered a 9-0 run for the Spartans who then took a 31-23 edge midway through the second.
Down seven points with just over three minutes left in the second, Brooks hit a jumper in the paint and Jackson drilled a shot from distance to close the gap to 35-33 at the half.
Following a jumper from Brooks and a 3-pointer from Matoush, WashU took a slight 38-37 edge before things were tied back up, 40-40 with 6:34 on the clock.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from the Spartans put them up 46-41 but the Bears tied things up at 46 with a layup from Arnott and a 3-pointer from
Sabrina DelBello.
CWRU went up 53-48 on a Kayla Characklis jumper to close out the third quarter. The Spartans then opened the fourth quarter with a layup from Margaret Terry to take a seven-point advantage. Another 3-pointer from VanderBeck bumped the lead to eight points, 58-50, with just over eight minutes left on the clock.
Following a free throw from Terry and a layup from Characklis, the Spartans took their first double-digit lead of the game, 63-52. The Bears cut it down to nine with a layup from Arnott, but another 3-pointer from Mills extended the lead to 66-54.
As the clock ticked down, the Bears would close the gap to eight points, but could get no closer, ending in a 10-point loss.
WashU is back in action on Sunday against Carnegie Mellon at 2 p.m. ET.
