St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team enjoyed a 30-point victory on Friday evening, as the Bears rolled past Brandeis University 89-59 at the Field House.
With the victory, WashU moves to 2-0 in league play and is currently in a tie for first place in the league standings with Rochester. In addition, the Bears have won three consecutive games and move to 9-4 overall on the year.
WashU shot 54 percent from the field in the win, which included a 66 percent shooting effort in the third period, and a 64 collective shooting percentage in the fourth quarter. The Bears also knocked down 10 three-point field goals and held BU to 27 percent shooting on the evening.
Jessica Brooks notched a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds on 10-15 shooting. Defensively, Brooks also recorded three steals in the victory.
Also reaching double figures scoring were seniors
Maya Arnott and
Naomi Jackson. Arnott produced 18 points on 7-8 shooting with six rebounds, while Jackson tabbed a season-best 12 points on 4-8 shooting from three-point territory.
Brenna Loftus added six points and eight rebounds, while
Nailah McBeth and
Sammi Matoush both registered six points apiece.
Sabrina DelBello led the Bears with a team-high five assists, as all 10 players who saw the floor finished in the scoring column.
Statistically, WashU had another dominant effort on the glass and outrebounded the Judges 39027, which also included seven offensive rebounds. Furthermore, the Bears 46 points in the paint with 12 points scored off turnovers and 10 second-chance points.
After a back-and-forth contest through the first period, the Bears found some separation in the second quarter after outscoring Brandeis 17-10 to secure a 35-29 advantage at the break.
Arnott scored nine points in the frame on 4-5 shooting as WU used a 10-5 scoring run to end the quarter.
WashU completely dominated the second half, outscoring the Judges by a wide margin of 54-30.
The Bears shot over 60 percent in both quarters and got things started with a quick 8-0 run to maintain a 43-29 edge.
WU held a 21-point lead at 65-44 going into the fourth, closing out the final minutes of the period on a 15-8 run.
WashU extended its lead out to 30 points after yet another fast start to the fourth quarter, using a 12-2 run in the opening minutes as they held a 77-47 advantage.
The Bears will matchup with No. 1 NYU on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
