St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team closed out the WashU Labor Day Invite with a 3-0 clean sweep over Saint Benedict at the Field House on Saturday.
WashU won the opening set 25-11 and then claimed the second set 25-16 before finishing off the match with a 25-23 set victory in the third.
The Bears currently sit at 4-0 on the year after collecting a perfect 3-0 record at the Field House this weekend.
On Saturday, WashU registered 42 kills with a .311 hitting percentage and tacked on 62 digs defensively as a team.
Fifth-year senior
Michaela Bach led the charge on the offensive attack, as she posted a team-high 13 kills on Saturday along with 10 digs.
Jasmine Sells produced her third match of double digit kills with 11, while sophomore
Elise Gilroy tied her career-best in digs with 18.
First-year
Sam Buckley recorded her fourth consecutive match of at least 30 assists, leading the Bears on Saturday with a match-high 30.
Lucy Davis added five service aces and two blocks, both team-highs.
WashU cruised to a dominant opening set win, using strong play up front to set the tone with 14 kills and a ,357 hitting percentage. Tied at 4-4, the Bears broke away from the early tie with five straight points, including four consecutive kills.
The Bears would maintain their lead throughout the remainder of the set and closed out the frame on a 7-0 scoring run.
In the second set, it was a back-and-forth battle right from the start as both teams traded leads in the first 25 points.
Leading by a slim 13-12 margin, WashU quickly opened up on the lead with an 8-2 scoring run for a 21-14 lead. In addition, WashU claimed the final three points of the set at 25-16 to take a 2-0 set lead.
The Bears put the finishing touches on the match in the third frame, holding off a late rally from CSB.
WU opened up the third with a sizable 7-2 lead, but the Bennies would tie up the set at three separate times at 11-11, 12-12, and 14-14.
WashU responded with a 5-1 scoring run over the next six points to push its lead out to 19-15. The Bears would hold on to the lead for the remainder of the set and after two match point attempts,
Michaela Bach sealed the contest with her 13
th kill of the day.
WashU is back at the Field House on Wednesday evening as they play host to non-conference opponent Dubuque at 7 PM.
