Wheaton, Ill. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision on the road on Saturday evening at Wheaton in non-conference play.
WashU moves to 2-3 on the young season with the loss and Wheaton improves to 3-3-2 overall.
In Saturday's match, WashU had multiple good looks on target in the opening minutes of action as they aimed to set the tone for the match.
However, Wheaton struck first with a goal in the 29th minute of play off a corner kick, scoring on a header that finished inside the right post for a 1-0 lead.
The Bears were able to find the equalizer in the 33rd minute after
Owen Culver scored his fourth goal of the season, assisted by
Rabee Haidari to even the score back at 1-1.
Culver's fourth goal of the year was a beauty, as he worked his way past three Wheaton defenders before drilling a shot outside the edge of the box into the upper left corner.
The junior currently ranks tied for third in the UAA in total goals scored this season and is second in points with 11.
Both teams went into the locker room even at 1-1, but the Thunder came out strong in the second half and the Bears' opportunities to score were limited.
Wheaton broke through the 1-1 tie in the 59th minute with a goal from eight yards out to reclaim a 2-1 lead.
Around 10 minutes later, a handball from the Bears resulted in a penalty kick for the Thunder and Wheaton capitalized with its third goal of the day to take a 3-1 lead.
WashU was held to only two shots-on-goal in the final 20 minutes of action, as shots from
Gavin Morse and
Zach Susee were saved by Wheaton's keeper.
The two teams registered identical shooting figures tonight with 14 attempts and six shots on target.
Matt Martin logged three saves in goal in the loss.
Culver,
Peter Radovich, Morse, Susee, and
Ryan An all collected two shots apiece, combining for over 70 percent of Washington U. 's shot totals.
The Bears will be back in play at home on Tuesday against Hope at 3 p.m.
