St. Louis, Mo. – It was a great day on Sunday for the No. 20 Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team, as the Bears swept Brandeis 25-22, 25-10, 25-20 on day two of the UAA Round Robin Tournament, capping off an undefeated 3-0 weekend at the Field House.
In addition, Head Coach
Vanessa Walby won her 200
th game at WashU, as the Bears continue to stay perfect this season at 12-0.
Washington U. posted 34 kills on Sunday, as
Michaela Bach and
Lane Bohrer each led the attack with nine kills apiece. Bach also notched nine digs in the victory.
WashU ended the day with 11 service aces and six blocks and took advantage of 24 unforced errors from Brandeis.
Bohrer and
Elise Gilroy had three service aces apiece, while
Jasmine Sells and
Zoe Foster both chipped in with seven kills.
Foster also played a huge key to the Bears' success on Sunday up front with four blocks.
Taryn Gurbach tabbed 18 digs and
Sam Buckley recorded a double-double of 30 assists and 11 digs.
It was a competitive opening set, as Brandeis and the Bears combined for 29 kills altogether. The Judges had their best set as a team in the first frame, hitting a collective .233 as a team.
The Bears used a 13-6 run to reclaim the lead after falling behind 4-0 early for a 13-10 advantage.
After the Judges cut the lead down to 17-15 later on, WashU relied on kills from Bohrer and Sells to push them ahead 23-19.
A kill from Bach closed out the opening set in favor of the Bears at 25-22.
Washington U. dominated the second, winning 25-10. Despite only collecting nine kills as a team in the frame, the Bears won 10 points on Brandeis errors and four points on service aces.
After leading 6-5 early on, WashU would steamroll ahead on a 18-3 scoring run before finishing off the set on a service error from the Judges.
The Bears were out in front 6-3 early on in the third set, but Brandeis' 6-0 run pushed the Judges in front 9-6.
WashU countered with a 7-1 run to take the lead right back at 13-10. The Judges would climb back even at 15-15, before another 7-1 scoring from Washington U. would propel the Bears to a 22-16 advantage.
Foster registered the 11
th service ace of the day for the Bears on match point to give WU a 25-20 set victory and match win.
Washington U. is back in action on Wednesday at Greenville for a mid-week contest at 7:00 p.m.
