Oshkosh, Wis. – The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team fell 78-42 at (RV) UW-Oshkosh on Thursday afternoon in the Bears' opening game of the BSN Winter Classic held in Oshkosh, Wis.
WashU drops to 6-4 on the year and UW-Oshkosh moves to 8-3 on the season with the victory. The Bears will look to regroup and bounce back tomorrow at noon CT against UW-Stout.
First-year Nailah McBeth led WashU in scoring with 11 points and six rebounds on 5-7 shooting from the field. Senior Sammi Matoush also reached double figures scoring with 10 points.
Jessica Brooks tallied eight points and five rebounds, while Maya Arnott posted six points and seven boards.
As a team, WashU shot 31 percent from the floor and 44 percent from the free throw line, while UW-Oshkosh completed the contest shooting 48 percent, including 14 three-point field goals and an 80 percent shooting effort at the foul line. The Titans also scored 30 points off turnovers, as the Bears committed 23 in total on Thursday.
WashU forced 10 UWO turnovers in the opening period, but found themselves trailing 17-10 after the Titans sank four threes and closed out the quarter on a 10-3 run.
UWO outscored WU 21-10 in the second and had another big finish to the period. WashU trailed by single digits at 27-18 with under four minutes left before halftime, but Oshkosh compiled an 11-0 run to push their advantage out to 20 points.
WashU trailed by over 20 points for a majority of the third quarter, but cut the lead down to 18 heading into the fourth. However, UWO quickly extended its lead back to over 20 points as they sprinted out to a 9-0 scoring run to begin the period.
The Titans shot 10-12 from the field in the fourth quarter and outscored WashU by a margin of 25-7 throughout the period.
